Attention folks in the weather, climate, disaster, wildfire, and Earth science communities: NSF has just published a new "Dear Colleague" letter inviting feedback (by Mar 13) on the proposal to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). www.nsf.gov/funding/...

My department is hiring a Lecturer! If you are passionate about educating the next generation of geoscientists, send us an application!
🚨 We are Hiring!!! 🚨 UF Geology is searching for a Teaching Faculty (Lecturer or Senior Lecturer) in Earth Surface Processes. Lecturer positions at UF are faculty positions with promotion potential, the ability to advise students, & apply for funding if desired. Apply by Jan. 5th! Link Below ⚒️🧪
Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, Georgia. Got bit by so many flying insects but what a great sunrise!
Had a great time at GSA with the geo community! But I definitely need to clarify that I have not been director of (or active in) the IAGD @accessiblegeo.bsky.social since January. The current executive committee can help with info, networking, and connecting with the org.
We are excited to bring back GeoSPACE in it's full version - complete with virtual participation option for summer 2026. Content focus is planetary, volcanology and basic field geology. Come hang with the cool kids next summer!
The application window for GeoSPACE 2026 is now open! Join us online or in-person in Arizona for a two-week planetary geology field camp through @ufgeology.bsky.social. Open to geo-gators as well as visitors from other schools. If you are looking for an accessible field camp, check us out! ⚒️
Coming of a long pause in posting to thank the colleagues and former students that nominated @geospace-field.bsky.social at @ufgeology.bsky.social for this award, it really means a lot. And huge thanks always to my amazing team of GeoSPACE collaborators that contribute so much to this project ❤️
Exciting Announcement: Our program is the 2025 winner of the @agu.org Award for Advancing Inclusive Excellence in STEM! We are so thankful to our peers and former students that nominated us for creating geoscience field training opportunities for all ⚒️🌎♿ news.clas.ufl.edu/geospace-pro...

Abstracts are due July 30th! Please consider submitting to our “Indigenous Science to Action” session- I’ve had the distinct pleasure being part of this session since 2019, of working and meeting with both Indigenous and Indigenous allied scholars.
Should #LPI and #USRA restore all censored abstracts? Should they commit to preserving scientific freedom of speech at #LPSC? And should they commit to not censoring #LPSC2026 submissions? If the answer is yes, then sign this petition! https://forms.gle/G1yAxZqmDujbVDHR7
The 4th year of GeoSPACE is underway in Arizona. We are so grateful for the donations that supported running the course this year and supporting a great group of students! Here's some of our crew with an extra crew member at Meteor Crater 🚀👩🚀

Everyone needs to understand that dismantling NSF will have devastating long term consequences in our competitiveness and innovation in science, technology and beyond. 1/

Carleton University and the IAGD are putting on an accessible geology field trip on May 11, 2025. We hope you can join us! Details on the attached flyer. Apply at shorturl.at/DkBOO or contact beth.mclartyhalfkenny@carleton.ca for more information.
One week ago, I got to witness an eruption at Kilauea Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The fire fountain was hundreds of feet tall, it was incredible! I am just getting around to playing with my photos from that night, so enjoy this belated look at eruption #11 in the 2025 sequence 😍🌋
Heading home from a wonderful seminar visit to U of Hawaii Hilo and Manoa. Saw humpback whales, sea turtles, amazing landscapes and one of my bucket list natural wonders- a fire fountain!! Thanks Kilauea (episode 11 on 2/25/25 for the volcano nerds who want to know) 🤩

Please read and share. But especially share with folks that might not realize how critical Section 504 is to so many people. I tried to write a simple clear explanation at the break. Gift link here: www.startribune.com/why-are-repu...
Why are Republican states trying to overturn a pillar of disability rights?
They may not be successful in repealing Section 504 as part of the attack on treating gender dysphoria, but it begs the question of what they might come for next.

NEW: On Section 504. "Attacks on any one group will be used as a wedge to attack all of us. You may not personally know any trans people, and you may even be uncomfortable with the idea ... but letting this attack go forward will eventually hurt you and the things you love, too." /1
We just hit our 50 donor target, thank you all so much - I recognized many familiar names on the donor list! February 20 is the finale of this fundraiser so it's not too late to chip in. More funds means we can accept more students, and I am so grateful for everyone's support!
Geo-community: GeoSPACE needs your help. It costs about $2,500 per student to run this accessible field course and many of our students simply can't afford that. Bonus points if you donate this week and help us unlock a donor pledge with 50 donations of any size. Thank you in advance!!

Update: UF has decided my work is exempt from the DEIA ban as long as it focuses on research and doesn't "stray into advocacy". I'm happy I can move forward, but feel like I'm moving forward on a tightrope.
Yesterday UF sent out a stop work order on DEIA activities, impacting my entire research program, likely including @geospace-field.bsky.social. I put my whole heart into my accessibility work. It's hard to see it, and so many other worthy equity projects crushed 💔 www.alligator.org/article/2025...
Just a reminder folks, this earthquake data comes from the USGS. The tsunami information comes from NWS. The educational information comes from EarthScope. ALL FEDERALLY FUNDED. These are your tax dollars at work for the public good.
Every single one of my grants is likely to get pulled out of consideration if this is true. I had millions of dollars of potential funding wrapped up into these opportunities, wasted potential for students in Hawai‘i.
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.
Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

There are plenty of awful things happening in the world right now, but I got a nose boop from a little manatee yesterday and I'm gonna coast on that happy feeling all week 😊
Traveling home from facilitating a workshop on creating accessible field trips for UVA's environmental science department. So happy to see the energy and enthusiasm for creating accessible field labs for their students! Big thanks to grad student Heather Christensen and crew for organizing.
Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.
