Bipedal meatbag. Professor of volcano stuff on the Island of Hawai‘i.

“I use it for data analysis” “I use it for literature reviews” “I use it to summarize articles” “I use to generate ideas” then you do no understand research or rigor or ethics and you are aligned with grifters, opportunists, billionaires, and millionaires who made their money through exploitation.

I put on my petty glasses and pointed out all of the issues and inconsistencies in their damage report, requested the video footage I know LAX takes when you enter the rental center, and mentioned I spoke with a lawyer. They quickly dropped the claim. Don’t rent from budget/avis is the lesson here.

Avis/budget sent me a $1100 bill for damage to a rental car. Anyone know what those window makings mean? The damage estimate is dated 45 hours after I dropped it of plus 4 extra miles... I always get video of the car when I pick it up, but forgot to do the same when dropping it off.

A vent with a big dumb scratch down the side

If you’re running a program that requires an in depth application for undergrads, I’m begging you to provide feedback to those who weren’t selected. These folks need feedback to learn how to improve subsequent applications. It’s more work, but it’s important work we should be doing for the next gen.

Graduation and award season is upon us. Behold, Klaus is modeling the bounty of lei from my students and colleagues that were bestowed upon me for winning a teaching award (the makers of the lei have demanded their efforts be photographed on this magnificent beast).

A giant black Newfoundland dog wearing several gorgeous flower and lei la‘i. He is standing next to a prized hedgie from his massive collection of stuffed hedge hogs.

The tech industry is gutting our public science infrastructure and hijacking the NSF to be their own R&D department. Not paying taxes is apparently not enough; they need both hands in our pockets. (There’s nothing wrong with funding those fields; it’s funding them only at the expense of others).

Does anyone have a geomorph/earth surface processes course prep they’re willing to share? I’m tasked with taking over this class and it’s my 11th new prep in 3.5 years. Can trade mediocre volcano content!

My union rep legitimately suggested “training” AI to learn our writing styles to help craft our tenure dossiers. Absolutely the fuck not. Me: AI is a bullshit slip machine that doesn’t work like that. I would fail my students if they did that. Him: it’s inevitable + we should be early adopters.

Screen shot 3 panel from the tv show hacks.

Panel 1: ai is here, and it’s here to stay

Panel 2: see, that is a big part of why I hate it. This forced inevitability.

Panel 3: you could easily stop it if people could say they didn’t want it, but you don’t want to give people a choice.
