I’ve been caught in rips twice in my life. Once on Australia’s Gold Coast: I stupidly swam outside the flags. The lifeguard who saved me spoke to me like I’ve never been spoken to before or since. I deserved every word.

One outbreak of concern and the entire “sane” side of the public health immediately resorted back to the paternalism of telling us not to worry, this isn’t another COVID, etc. They didn’t learn a thing. We didn’t appoint them to be our therapists or parents. Provide info, don’t dictate how to feel.
