Amanda Aguilar, an immigration lawyer, said cartels held one of her clients for ransom immediately after his deportation to Mexico via the Tamaulipas border. “My clients will say, ‘Can you please ask them not to drop me off in Tamaulipas?” Aguilar said. “And I do ask, but ICE just doesn’t care.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum promised access to social security and jobs. But as one lawyer said, it’s more like water, a hug, and a few pesos — certainly not enough to reintegrate people into Mexican society.

One upshot for Sheinbaum in the madness of the new trade war she finds herself in: Mexico was very possibly heading for a contraction this year regardless of tariffs. Trump’s just given her a helluvalot of cover for that.
Mexico is facing perhaps the most complex geopolitical environment of the century so far, and it will do so without resources, without justice, and with deeply weakened institutions.
