The problem with this comparison is it's apples to oranges. Economy fares are cheaper, sure, but the seats are far smaller, the leg room is far smaller, and the service is abundantly worse in every conceivable manner.

Pay 1986 equivalent prices today and you're in premium economy (the equivalent of 1986 first class) or business class (a product far beyond anything from 1986).
