Next week, the great @ntabrizy.bsky.social will be at @debalie.bsky.social to speak about her years of experience using OSINT to report on Iran, covering protests, state repression, and the U.S.-Israeli military campaigns. ++ You can say hi to fellow investigators such as @baydoun.nl and myself.

My dear friend and colleague, @ntabrizy.bsky.social, will be speaking this month at De Balie in Amsterdam about reporting on Iran through OSINT. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Nilo on several investigations and will also be there, so I highly recommend attending.

Spoke to @columjournreview.bsky.social about the blackout open-source investigators are facing in the Middle East. I highlighted the investigation by @baydoun.nl, @ntabrizy.bsky.social, @wammezz.bsky.social, and myself on Israel’s strikes on Tehran’s oil depots, and how we worked around it.

Blind spots.

A satellite company popular among journalists issued an indefinite blackout in the Middle East. Open-source investigators got to work—and challenged official narratives.

Using interviews, satellite imagery and atmospheric modelling, we reconstructed how smoke from strikes on oil infrastructure spread across Tehran. The plume extended across much of the city. Investigation by @baydoun.nl, @ntabrizy.bsky.social, @wammezz.bsky.social, and myself.

Mapped the evacuation orders issued by the Israeli army in south Lebanon over the past two days. The March 03 order marks a significant expansion beyond the immediate border towns and well beyond the Litani River. I counted 105 villages so far.

"91% of white phosphorus strikes happened before Israeli forces entered southern Lebanon in Oct 2024, contradicting Israel’s official version. Of all strikes we documented, 39% hit civilian areas, 16% agricultural land, and only 44% uninhabited zones." @baydoun.nl in @france24.com.

After months of verification and mapping, the archive now includes 248 confirmed white phosphorus strikes across South Lebanon (2023-2024). Only incidents with visual evidence were used, then geolocated, verified, and cross-checked with satellite imagery Part of my PhD research at TU Delft.

NEW: We’ve added 53 more white phosphorus strikes to our archive whitephosphorus.info, bringing the total to 248 verified and geolocated incidents across South #Lebanon (2023–2024). The IDF says these were used as smokescreens, away from civilians. Our findings show otherwise. 🧵
