A _HUGE_ benefit of taking classes this summer: expanded access to articles I'd otherwise have to pay for. As someone who tends to read a lot of journal articles, etc. from academia, this is a benefit I can't quantify. also...thinking of access issues in general but that's another story...

It's definitely a port and chocolate kind of problem set. I'm more of a paleography girl, but I can see how this might be fun - given enough time to comprehend all the crazy little bits and bobs. It is certainly making me think about language learning in a new way.

photo of computer with a linguistics lecture open; to left of screen are port and chocolate treats, an International IPA chart is to the right and a historical linguistics problem about to be worked on as evidenced by the pen at the ready.

Anyone remember a popular kid's book (series?) from the 60s (I think) about a boy who solves codes w/ his friends? I remember reading because of the codes, but can't remember anything else. ANYWAY... today I felt like him as I worked on this fun learning project for historical linguistics class.

2 print pages with lots of scribbled handwriting plus one handwritten sheet of paper. The print pages have some ancient writing on them along with some transliteration and translation. One piece of ancient writing is being deciphered by hand, apparently.

My music player is like a little time machine, taking me back to 2-3 decades ago - basically the last time I was 'tuned in' to the music scene. Snapshot: - Cheryl Wheeler - Dar Williams - Ani DiFranco - Damien Rice - Duncan Sheik - John Mayer - Anna Nalick - Dido - Catie Curtis

I think I'm going to have to designate weekends as "analog days." or something... In my #languagelearning I find myself straddling the analog/digital divide because of writing practice v. typing practice, sentence writing practice v. note taking, etc.

I always liked was using image prompts for #languagelearning activities so for this weekend's language discussion group I put together three 'summer adventure' images (plus some potential vocab and discussion questions etc.) I hope it goes well!

I love exploring #languagelearning options - from various modalities and methods to different approaches and tasks/activities - across different languages. This has been a life-long hobby so I have had the opportunity to explore quite a few options.

The uncritical adoption of AI in science is alarming — we urgently need guard rails

Artificial intelligence is rapidly accelerating scientific output, but risks narrowing inquiry, weakening judgement and undermining how scientists are trained.
