London got no rain in July: I remember walking through Green Park which was no longer green, and Hyde Park being crunchy underfoot. Beeston not far behind in the parched stakes. Here in Devon / Cornwall it's actually a bit green, but starting to yellow. Is there a satellite image of a dehydrated UK?
After multiple years living by the River Trent and never seeing the lead singer of None Inch Nails, I've just walked to the River Deer and saw some deer.
Pleasantly surprised by Skegness: beach and sea lovely and warm, generally friendly, not mad busy. I was terrified I would ruin happy kid memories as it's the most Reform area, but I've had a fantastic day at the Vegas of Lincolnshire.
For the first time in 30 years, I'm off to Skegness, a place I'd spend my Summer childhoods before my parents got better off and instead took us to Ingoldmells. Last time I went (with my gran) I lost my contact lenses diving drunk into a pool and had to navigate home via echolocation
Son asked to practice his goalkeeping so I had that David Seaman from the late nineties pop around
I speak for all heatwave Britain when I say I miss trousers
In about the second week of teaching journalism I get the students to find a subject to use for a vox pop. My fave was an earnest young man suggesting the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, while his team makes suggested the suitability of pineapple on pizza. They did pineapple on pizza.
if Andy Burnham’s sole achievement is to bring about the demise of vox pops, then his time as PM will be a huge success
Cool, Durham man. As I don't drive, motorways are no good for me so hopefully I'll get a rebate
BUT MY CAR
Having been in London for three days now I was firmly of the view that the right wing narrative that 'London has fallen' was just the fear mongering dog whistles of the worst people in the world. Nah, I thought, what a vibrant, cool city. Then I saw this and yes London Has Fallen
Bought the cheapest ticket to the Proms, restricted view. Have been given a free upgrade to near the front. Benefits of holidaying solo.
Saw Ben Fogle on Regents Street earlier and if a famous person ever looked more like themselves than Ben Fogle I would be astonished. He is SO Ben Fogle.
Ended up walking down Whitehall today and there was a right fuss about something. Then went to the UK's most expensive house / outdoor squat/ UK's Most On The Nose Metaphor. Today, I'm off for a pointless walk across London then a trip to the Albert Hall for some concert or other.
Where the World Cup was a success it was because of football and fans. Where it was ugly it was nearly entirely because of FIFA and Trump.
Infantino's White Trainers vs Andrew Tates Pedal Pushers is the real contest of the weekend
Cucurella is looking like a man of honour and dignity, and if that isn't evidence on how cynical Argentina is then I don't know what is
Argentina play anti-football, a cynical hacking game. It kills games, stifles them of life. Yesterday's joyous, open and card-free goal fest was proper football. (That's not sour grapes: England are far from my first team)
That's the second best we've ever done at a World Cup, and first best for utterly completely batshit at a World Cup
A few years ago I watched many of this England squad in the U21s annihilate Serbia 9-1. This match has those vibes.
Ffs, a hydration break at the County v Forest game . Roundly booed, as it should be.
I'm in London on a solo holiday Mon, Tues and Weds next week. Is there anything there to do?
World Cup Semis should be best of three but no one at Fifa listens to me
