🧪🧵 🪰 🐜🪲🐞🦗🐛🦋🪳🦟 How many species of insect are there? A seemingly simple question, but one that has been 'bugging' scientists for years. Our work out today suggests that there are millions more than we had previously expected. doi.org/10.1073/pnas... @gdfcf.bsky.social

It’s the perfect summer weather to be spotting members of the Oedemeridae, the false blister beetles. Beautiful metallic colours frolicking on meadow vegetation. This thick legged flower beetle is pumped! 🪲 💚 #InsectWeek coleoptera.org.uk/family/oedem...
The Fairy-ring Longhorn Beetle (Pseudovadonia livida) is small and flower loving. An anomaly amongst most longhorns, its larvae developing in soil where Fairy-ring fungus grows, rather than dead wood. Adults love pollen and nectar from umbellifer flowers, as well as they love to mate 💚 🪲 #InsectWeek
When small brown beetles be small brown beetles. Industrial scale genitalia extraction to determine the true differences and help to describe the species better. A heady mix of precise scientific method and inventive use of a vegetable steamer 😎 🧪 🪲
For this month’s news roundup, we’re focusing on the awesome invertebrates that have hit the headlines in May! Join us to discover deep sea creatures, shiny beetles and Sir David Attenborough’s own wasp! (1/4)🧵
After a hard day’s beetling, beetle rescue on my way home. Ants were moving in but this beautiful lesser stag beetle was lucky to encounter this entomologist tonight. Saved from death by ant or human, delivered back into the undergrowth 🪲
