My editor asked me to write about what happened to summer:
We launched a war on nature. Now we are in a climate warzone | Rebecca Solnit
Summer is not what it once was. We have been robbed of one of life’s great joys

Meet Tigernos, one of Britain’s earliest named sailors! ⚓️ A Briton and Roman fleet veteran, his story is recorded on the bronze Lanchester Diploma issued by Antoninus Pius in AD 150. It grants him honourable discharge from the Classis Germanica and Roman citizenship. #EpigraphyTuesday #Archaeology
Most Pompeiians lived in multi-story dwellings without kitchens and got their food at thermopolia, essentially taverns with ready-made food and wine. There is a fine fresco and colored plaster lararium - shrine - above the counter at the thermopolium of Lucius Vetutius Placidus.🏺 1/ 📸 me

The Big Apple bench is going in. The ball chairs that were all soccer balls during the World Cup, now reflect all sorts of summer sports you can watch on Granville Street patios. Tonight’s Dominican Street Dance drew a crowd. And simple games help make the street magnetic. Week Two looking good.
Today I learned that the NHS has "cycle responders" who are paramedics. One of my wife's coworkers was recently treated by one after collapsing in London. The bike, not surprisingly, responded much faster than the ambulance. Really cool! www.londonambulance.nhs.uk/calling-us/w...
A beautiful night for some outdoor music in the city, in this case in The Beaches. This is the city Toronto is.
Performative bullshit. Fauci is a hero. Besides, they’re trying to ban an 85-year-old retiree from a job he already left.
This terracotta kantharos from the #MetMuseum is one of my favorites. The parade of horsemen is beautifully and confidently painted; all of the men ride bareback, of course (6th c. BCE - no saddles or stirrups). But seated with their legs up and forward seems unstable. 🤔 🏺 1/ 📸 me
