Geophysics and Python enthusiast 🌏🐍 Postdoc in the EarthByte group at Sydney Uni fusing tectonic reconstructions with mantle geochemistry to explain 🌋

Very nice to host @geoniette.bsky.social at EarthByte as part of our Sydney Uni 🤝 Glasgow Uni Ignition Grant on how variations in subduction angle affect volcanism and porphyry copper formation. A great start the year with lots of productive conversations and collaborations!

This is a HUGE improvement to the DECRA application process. It’s now much shorter and has some welcome tweaks to the weightings for each category.

#DECRA #DE25 applications were opened yesterday by ARC. As with the Laureates & Futures, the DECRA app form has been significantly reduced in length & complexity. IMO, this is a Very Good Thing, *especially* for an early-career researcher scheme. Short 🧵 on the changes👇

In Australia, the absence of relief in the interior means that the timescales of groundwater flow can be even older ... maybe even millions of years. And, interestingly, this means that tilting due to dynamic stresses from the mantle may influence the flow patterns.

Ancient groundwater: Why the water you're drinking may be thousands of years old

As surface water diminishes in the Western US, people are drilling deeper wells – and tapping into older groundwater that can take thousands of years to replenish naturally.
