@hlinehan.bsky.social Hi Hugh, just wanted to say how pleased I was to see the first installment of your latest summer series in my podcast feed this morning. Looking forward to listening! (and maybe even to hearing Pat’s impressions)

I can suspend my disbelief while watching film in most respects except for when people use microfilm to look at old newspapers AND QUICKLY LAND ON THE EXACT PAGE THAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. Without slowly scrolling through countless pages, without having to nudge the image or adjust the contrast.
Ah, microfilm; the joys of trying to move it slightly in the right direction so you could read the next section
Extremely disappointed to discover that the Norwegian word for “spork” is «spork» and not «skjaffel» («skje» + «gaffel»)
In our continuing series Western Europe Doesn’t Want Ukraine To Win
On Friday the Government published a terse 450 word summary of its long awaited report into Aughinish Alumina. It was light on both detail and definitive conclusions We obtained the full 51 page report. Read what's being kept hidden in Saturday's Irish Times
I think it would be useful if journalists stopped adding the word 'radical' to descriptions of energy secretaries for the apparent reason that they understand the urgency of the climate crisis. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
I’m sorry, but what is ‘radical’ about the policies pursued by Miliband?
I welcome the idea of a minister for AI: it is a massive change which could affect every aspect of society, economics, the climate and even humanity itself. But if this minister is just supposed to act as a tech booster rather than taking a holistic approach, they’ll be worse than useless

It's World Emoji Day, so here's a friendly reminder that we have 🚷 and 🚳 but not
Extremely Norway energy that NRK radio is telling us about the guy listening to the game on Snøhetta (2200m mountain)

American tourists walking into a Norwegian grocery store at 9pm thinking they can buy “a few beers” shortly to learn a lesson about liquor laws 🤣🤣
Maybe NATO should just not have summits for 2027 and 2028. Low-key constructive work to transfer more responsibility to Europe can continue without giving Trump a platform to beat up on allies and undermine deterrence further.
💥 Trump "completely committed" to Nato despite threats over Greenland, US troops in Europe & Iran support, Rutte insists as leaders arrive at a summit of the shaky alliance Follow the developments live from Ankara w/ @jprathbone.bsky.social @lucyfisher.ft.com & I here: www.ft.com/content/f2eb...
Any Democrat who says something like this should be forced to wear an “I ❤️ Ronald Reagan” t-shirt for all public appearances
not an immediate referendum on him as a candidate and again, it’s not just him doing this but cmoooooooooon dawg
When something is so obviously a terrible idea, it is ok to just...say no thanks and ban it. We don't have to wait 15 years and then slowly ban if after a whole bunch of irreperable damage has been done to individuals and society.
Can’t handle a warm Tuesday night in Nottingham though
Sooryavanshi really is something special.
I know we're all focused on FIFA & Trump & the unprecedented corruption & complicity in authoritarianism, but let us not overlook the IOC & Trump & the unprecedented corruption & complicity in authoritarianism.
IOC moves to end Russian neutrality for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
The IOC advised Olympic sports bodies to end a three-year program vetting Russians for neutral status ahead of qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Personally I think it’s terrific that the BBC live blog is just transcribing everything Farage says with no fact checking. This is how journalism works.

Main downside of Norway beating Brazil: A week of dumb and misinformed Norway takes on this website. Yes, there is publicly funded healthcare, childcare, and schools. That’s because we pay a lot more in taxes (complimentary) than the US!
Saw someone tweeting about the World Cup and how Norway has free healthcare cause they actually care about their citizens or whatever and I’m like their healthcare is free because they have a massive oil wealth fund with the equivalent of $400k ***per citizen*** en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governm...
Brazil deserved that for basically assaulting the ref when appealing for the penalty
New Norwegian 🇳🇴 level unlocked: buying a *second* box for ski wax 😎 The days are getting shorter and winter is coming ❄️
We should not accept this framing. Universities are not businesses, they do not operate on the same principles. Universities have a social function distinct from profit-maximizing firms. They produce and disseminate knowledge, especially knowledge that is not produced by the private sector.
Intrigued to hear Danny Kruger, of Reform UK, tell Any Questions that universities need to "change their business model". What would he suggest? Selling crypto? Acting as "brand ambassadors" for Direct Bullion? Recording videos saying "Up the Ra"? Or getting a billionaire to chuck us £5 million?
@econromesh.bsky.social Hi Romesh, I was hoping to email you about a possible piece for the Economics Observatory. Would you mind sharing your email address by DM?
I am one of the most self-critical Americans you can find, but this is pure historically illiterate haterade.
Stan Grant’s eviscerating article in @thesaturdaypaper.com.au on the decline of USA & any pretence of its geopolitical, or imperial, importance. Now impotence.
Researchers at two Russell Group universities published scientific research funded by an "anonymous donation". But the money really came from an industry group with a clear conflict of interest 🥸 After 10 months of "investigation", Wiley has done... nothing. No retraction, no EOC, no correction.
