Beavers are now on the clock. As days get shorter and nights colder, there are limited days left in the calendar to set up for the winter. All the food that they will eat will need to be jammed below where the ice will form, so no tie to enjoy the fall colours. #AB #Mammals

For the first time in four hundred years, baby beavers have been born in Glen Affric. At least two kits were spotted at Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin. This milestone follows the release of seven beavers last October and a family of four this February 🦫 🧵2/

#すごいぜビーバー spacedaily.com/sd-q-how-doe...

How does a rodent that weighs 20 kilos and builds mud walls raise a valley's water table by nearly a metre and store more carbon in the wet ground than the trees above it?

How beaver dams — built by a 20-kilo rodent using teeth and mud — raise valley water tables by close to a metre and turn the soil beneath the forest into a carbon store that outperforms the trees abov...

Four new insights from the latest beaver research 🔍 From the first total carbon budget on beaver-engineered wetlands to the recovery of populations of IUCN Red List species, here are some of the latest findings 👇 1/2

Beavers can convert stream corridors to persistent carbon sinks
Open access | Published 18 March 2026
When extrapolating across all floodplain areas in Switzerland suitable for beaver recolonisation, beaver-driven carbon burial could offset approximately 1.2–1.8% of the country’s annual carbon emissions, achieved solely through a nature-based solution requiring no active management or direct costs.Beavers are boosting rare snail populations in Norfolk
Open access | Published 27 May 2026
At just 2–2.5mm tall, the Desmoulin’s whorl snail (Vertigo moulinsiana) is one of the UK’s most protected invertebrates and is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. With a dispersal rate of less than five metres per year, recovery can be slow.

Abrehart Ecology has monitored the River Wensum area for the snails for 25 years. At Sculthorpe Moor nature reserve: then a graph showing a sharp rise in snail numbers after the beavers arrived.Beaver wetlands are integral to reinstating dynamic ecological processes
Open access | Published 01 March 2026
Beaver wetlands are integral to reinstating dynamic ecological processes that provide refugia for multiple taxonomic groups, supporting taxa otherwise absent from the landscape. Our findings hint at the scale of past biodiversity loss associated with beaver-dependent wetlands, while offering a glimpse of what could be gained from their ongoing population recovery.
Using eDNA to study the biodiversity impacts of beaver activities
Open access | Published 16 May 2026
Beaver-modified streams supported distinct and, in several respects, more diverse aquatic communities compared to the control stream. Although vertebrate alpha diversity did not differ significantly between spatial groups, overall vertebrate occurrences were higher at beaver sites, with notable increases in amphibian taxa, stickleback, and semi-aquatic mammals such as water vole and water shrew.
