Convo at the grocery store: “Do you ride your bike every day?” “Most days.” “I see you with it. In my country, I wasn’t allowed to ride bikes. Because woman. I’m going to learn to ride. When I do, I’m going to tell you.” — Thanks for telling me your story, Bahar. (I live for these moments.)

"This map shows a critical situation... It’s hard to avoid speaking of an ecological breakdown or point of no return for some of France's aquatic environments…When a riverbed dries up completely, almost all aquatic biodiversity—flora & fauna—disappears, with consequences for the entire food chain."

At the root of all our problems stands one travesty: politicians’ surrender to the super-rich | George Monbiot
There are many excuses for failing to tax the ultra-wealthy. The truth is that governments don’t tackle the problem because they don’t want to, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Italy to place all 27 of its major cities on highest heat alert
Move comes as fourth heatwave of summer intensifies, edging temperatures in some areas close to 40C Italy is to place all of its 27 major cities, from Trieste in the north to Palermo in the south, under the highest heat alert as the fourth heatwave to hit the country this summer intensifies. A red alert means there is a higher chance of an emergency owing to the health risk posed by prolonged extreme temperatures to the entire population. Continue reading...

They should be talking about how badly Mark Carney has betrayed them
Are you surprised that Carney is going so far back on all his past environmental positions?
I’m surprised he is going *this* far. He was the UN Special Envoy on Climate Change and Finance. He spoke about golden investment opportunities in renewables. Nothing in his speeches or writing suggested more oil and gas as the key to future prosperity.
It is indeed horrifying that we are going backwards as a country on our climate change commitments.
I'm in St. Catharines for the week and all anyone is talking about is the flooding. The consequences of unchecked greenhouse gas emissions everywhere this summer. Floods and fires and heatwaves. It's horrifying that as a country we're going backwards on climate pledges www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Absolutely spot on. The billionaire class is a real threat to the lives and well being of the whole world and they must be taken out one way or another. Tax private wealth over €100m (more than plenty for a luxurious lifestyle) at 100% and imprison anyone found to have hidden away any more than that
As an aside, if any other professionals were as incompetent as certain journalists, they'd be sacked and disbarred. But in the rightwing press, gross incompetence appears to be a qualification. After all, without its bullshitters for hire, how else would capital deny, deflect and distract?
My column on how capital becomes a death cult. Faced with a choice between profit and human life, the radical right chooses profit. Then it tries to persuade us that mass death is what we want. It's the new phase of climate denial: accept your fate, earthlings. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
