At night, this reach of the River Nar fish paradise transforms into a close, dark otherworld. East Anglia's happiest, healthiest fish become even tamer; stunning Grayling here communing with night chalkelers (term coined by @themarshtit.bsky.social !). 🙏 Fi Cotter Craig for convening us. #MySwim 1/6

Come with me on a sublime exploration of the River Nar, during the May heatwave. Thanks Alec Birkbeck & eg @theriverstrust.bsky.social @naturalengland.bsky.social for restoring it to be a premier #Norfolk #chalkstream; fish heaven. Such a privilege to spend quality time with this huge Grayling. 1/25

Spawning Minnows! Among the great wonders of UK wildlife, unbeknownst to most of us, but to be found in our luckier rivers. My prize upon slipping into our local chalk stream, River Lark, Cavenham Heath, at start of Whitsun, suffering withdrawal from not having been in one since March. #MySwim 1/15

Sheer bliss, even on a grey day, to be in a #chalkstream for first time in >4 months & a thrill to spend my 1st ever quality time with big Graylings - what friendly fish! - in the River Nar upstream of Narborough. Thanks Alec Birkbeck & Fraser Bradbury for permission! #MySwim #Rivers #Norfolk 🧵1/9

Remember that hot weekend at the end of May? This is where I cooled off, along with seemingly half of Leeds - no wetsuit needed while circumnavigating Bower's Lake as it nestled among the buttercups and reeds. Sadly contained the inevitable strewn drinks containers. #MySwim 1/6

Fab news from China! Congrats to citizens & scientists who saved a key Spoon-billed Sandpiper wintering site, shared with 20,000 waterbirds of 46 species, from a new highway in Guangxi! Thanks Beijing for halting it & local government for seeking alternatives. www.sixthtone.com/news/1018593 #birds

How a Rare Bird Stopped a Highway Project in South China

The road was planned to cut through a critical spoon-billed sandpiper habitat. By first organizing online, and then taking action offline, amateur activists halted its construction.

Back in Little Ouse at @rspbengland.bsky.social Lakenheath Fen for 1st time since Aug bsky.app/profile/nume..., y'day, highlight was the small groups of large Common Bream I kept bumping into, tho there seemed a high incidence of disease if that's what the white marks are. #MySwim #Fish #Rivers 1/11

Yesterday was grey & sunless, visibility in River Little Ouse not great - far cry from the crystal clarity that should prevail in this #chalkstream, its bed strewn with chalk lumps - so I kept to the shallows, including a moulting Mute Swan haul out, & the edge of a fringing reef of willows. 7/19
