Our paper on breeding site fidelity in Red Phalaropes now available in early view @behavecol.bsky.social! academic.oup.com/beheco/advan... We colour banded 169 males and 184 females of this polyandrous shorebird on their Arctic breeding grounds, and monitored their return in the next year 1/4
๐ฆ A new paper out! GPS tracking of 85 Common Redshanks revealed how breeding phenology and habitat use vary across the species' breeding range, highlighting the value of protected grasslands, AES and tailored conservation. ๐ doi.org/10.1016/j.ge... #ornithology #waders #shorebirds #HABITRACK
New paper: How flexible are migratory stopovers? A 30-year study of western sandpipers shows little change in stopover duration across four key Pacific Flyway sites, suggesting limited scope to adjust refuelling time in response to environmental change โก๏ธ vist.ly/5bvqt #Ornithology

As Global Flyway Network we contributed to an Australia-wide assessment of non-breeding site fidelity of 12 shorebirds. Using 636,167 records of 84k individuals overall site fidelity was >95% but lower in Red Knot & Sanderling. Juveniles were less site faithful than adults. doi.org/10.1111/cobi...
1/Excited to share two new papers! The first is by Rozy Bathrick in @amornith.bsky.social on intra-specific variation in stopover site use. Rozy shows that Lesser Yellowlegs from different breeding sites use the Prairie Pothole Region in dramatically different ways. academic.oup.com/condor/artic...
Our comparative analyses with @bksandercock.bsky.social and colleagues is now included in July issue of Oikos, and is making the cover, with a stunning picture of one of my great friend Verca. Read the paper here: nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Our cover for July! ๐๏ธ๐ฆข A global review of more than 100 shorebird species reveals that annual survival has declined significantly, particularly among adults, highlighting growing conservation concerns and the need for long-term monitoring. vist.ly/59qeb ๐ทVeronika ล vestkovรก

Separately, whilst on St Kilda last month working on these endemic Wrens, a Redpoll which flew into our nets already had an ID ring. Turns out it was ringed in September 2025 as a first-year bird, on Sula in Norway. That's 1135km away from St Kilda! @jezierskimt.bsky.social @stkildawhs.bsky.social
Our (Jenny Dunn, Carolina Chagas, @willjsmith.bsky.social) paper on the evolution of island Wrens is finally out @evojlinnsoc.bsky.social! We describe the evolution of island gigantism in the St Kilda and Shetland subspecies. academic.oup.com/evolinnean/a...
