Our comparative analyses with @bksandercock.bsky.social and colleagues is now included in July issue of Oikos, and is making the cover, with a stunning picture of one of my great friend Verca. Read the paper here: nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Our cover for July! 🏖️🦢 A global review of more than 100 shorebird species reveals that annual survival has declined significantly, particularly among adults, highlighting growing conservation concerns and the need for long-term monitoring. vist.ly/59qeb 📷Veronika Švestková

In this blog post @dillensegerg.bsky.social discuss how forest patches can negatively affect ground nests in grassland species, and how lapwings mitigate this effect by being more aggressive when nesting near trees🌳 🌍 🔎 buff.ly/LZFCvZl
📖 New research Predator-guild-specific parental responses mitigate higher predation risk on ground nests close to forest patches in a mosaic landscape 🌳 🌍 🔎 buff.ly/HW9SwbK
Our new study with @justinedelautre.bsky.social @ankitha-jayanth.bsky.social @ckecz.bsky.social on forest impact on predation and behaviour of lapwing available in J. Animal Ecology: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... #lapwing #ornithology #PhDstudy #ethology #ecology
Predator‐guild‐specific parental responses mitigate higher predation risk on ground nests close to forest patches in a mosaic landscape
Predation increases close to habitat edges, but how animals cope with local predation variations remained poorly studied. In a mosaic landscape, lapwings were compensating for increased nest predatio...

My mini-review in JAB on brood parasite adaptation and speciation was recognized top-cited article for papers published in 2024. Thanks to @avianbiology.bsky.social for the ERC Mini review contest and this opportunity #broodparasite #speciation nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Active defence mechanisms in brood parasitism hosts and their consequences for parasite adaptation and speciation
Obligate brood parasitism is a peculiar behaviour found in some bird species. The costs for their hosts can be high, generating selection for active defence strategies including foreign egg and chick....

I was very happy to present the study we performed (a bit less about the emergency baby poster 🐣) that would not have been possible without the work of @justinedelautre.bsky.social @ankitha-jayanth.bsky.social @ckecz.bsky.social #lapwings #behaviour at #EOU26 @eoufledglings.bsky.social
@dillensegerg.bsky.social presents yet another massive work (unlike the poster size) on predation pressure and anti-predatory response of Northern Lapwing in relation to forest patches @eoufledglings.bsky.social @ckecz.bsky.social #Ornithology #birds 🐣🦃

New article in Oikos with a global review of annual survival for waders comparing estimation methods and phylogeny. Survival increases with body mass but decreases with migration distance and during past 40 years. Team led by @dillensegerg.bsky.social. #ornithology #waders doi.org/10.1002/oik....
New paper with @calonectris.bsky.social on Andean shorebirds phenology is out in Ecosphere @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social, where we combined citizen-science and field data to decipher nest timing of understudied species: esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/... #shorebird #bird #PhDstudy
Breeding seasonality in Charadriiformes on the Andean Altiplano is influenced by rain and possibly flood risk
The Andean Altiplano in South America represents a remarkable mountain ecosystem with unique wildlife. However, knowledge of breeding ecology for birds inhabiting Andean Altiplano is scarce, relying ...

A PhD chapter that I'm very proud of is finally out in @ecol-evol.bsky.social!🦉 Using nestbox cameras from 4 countries, we explored interactive effects of habitat quality &weather on provisioning &prey composition 🪱🪲🐀in Little Owls -a rapidly declining farmland raptor. #RaptorResearch #Ornithology
Habitat‐Dependent Provisioning Patterns Are Modulated by Weather Conditions in a Rapidly Declining Farmland Raptor
We monitored parental food provisioning of Little Owls in four European countries with contrasting farmland structure using nestbox cameras and demonstrated that across all countries, provisioning ra...

#iwsg2025 Is over, and I already missed it. Happy that so many people wanted to chitchat with me about my vaporware poster about 3D nest morphology, or about our( @dillensegerg.bsky.social ) project about Andean shorebird breeding timing! See you next year @waderstudy.bsky.social !
Throwback to 2021, when me and @dillensegerg.bsky.social had the honor to be invited to participated in the chaccu, the roundup of the vicuña to shear the wool. It was hard to chase them while running at >4.500 meters of elevation near Arequipa!
Excited to announce the start of our 2025 field season in Argentina, investigating movement, antipredatory and nesting behaviours of teros with @delphyllis.bsky.social and @juancho-32.bsky.social #lapwing #teros #PhDstudy #ornithology
@dillensegerg.bsky.social gives a very interesting talk at #EOU2025 @eounion.bsky.social on the effect of rainfall on breeding phenology in Andean shorebirds! 🐣☔
Amazing poster of @sangeeth-sailas.bsky.social from JCU South Bohemia presenting one of his PHD chapter: global analysis of raptor, which raptors suffer from intentional mortality and deserve more protection measures at #EOU2025
[Please RT] Our collaborative project #BDBORS exploring the link between nesting phenology and substrate property, is still ongoing, with collected data in Asia and America. You monitor ground-nesting birds in tropics? Then consider joining us! Contact me :) #ornithology #birds #tropicalecology
Justine Delautre, M1 student in our team from @master-rainet.bsky.social, successful defended her thesis on risks and consequences lapwings are facing when nesting close to forests. We hope to share soon the results with you #ornithology #conservation #PhD #lapwing #shorebird
Curlews eavesdrop on prairie dog alarm calls to avoid danger. Prairie dogs = "keystone information producers" 💚 This thread explains the study outcomes, and the photo of the "badgerinator" used as a predator proxy is just the icing on the cake. 🧪🌏 Paper: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
We decided an experimental approach to this question could be cool. So Andrew strapped a taxidermied badger on top of an RC cart and drove the cart toward incubating curlews both while playing prairie dog ground-based predator calls and not (control). We lovingly call this the badgerinator. 🧪
A throwback to our WOS blog post about our 2021 field season in Peru with @calonectris.bsky.social #ornithology #lapwing
There's a new guest post on the WOS blog! WJO author Guillaume Dillenseger describes his work observing the courtship behavior of Andean Lapwings on the harsh, remote Peruvian Altiplano. #ornithology wilsonsociety.org/2024/06/03/g...
Very happy to see our new M1 student investigating the link between forest distance, predation risk and aggressiveness in lapwings in Czech Republic. Stay tuned to see the results of this study #shorebird #predation #lapwing #ornithology
