In Southmapton I am torn between the old Bargate Centre which was a Mall, and which never quite fired on all cylinders, probably because it had the ambience of a crypt; or the misplaced majesty of Canute's Pavilion in Ocean Village (which only ever reached 45% occupancy).

My son just tried on the Meta Glasses in a branch of John Lewis. Naturally I shouted "PERVERT" at him across the store.
Americans are getting as aerated on good old BeNiceBlueSky as they were on the old place! Have a look at the vituperation on this thread - no pulling first punches, straight in with the personal invective! It seems that "capitalism * socialism + rockets" really hits a nerve for them.
Anon Opin@anonopin.bsky.social · 2d agoThe Challenger disaster was a horrible tragedy, but I remember it was so shocking because catastrophe under NASA was so rare. This never-ending procession of privatised space rockets exploding every other week is making it mundane. Privatisation is shit.

Those that point out that the Cybertruck is a motorised phallus may not know that the Edsel suffered the absolute opposite reputation.

Bus fare cap: ok, drop in the ocean Handing control of buses to mayors: this is the important one. It doesn't matter how cheap your bus is if it doesn't exist or is so unreliable no one uses it anyway. We need a massive expansion of reliable buses.

Last year I went to a music festival in Derbyshire and was surprised to see some people I thought in fancy dress - but actually turned out to be in full "Connolly is a Martyr to free speech" garb. Unhinged. Can only assume Mel Gibson will play her in the film.

Rob Blundell@blundell.eu · 3mo agoJohn Healey went to my kids' school. I think it is testament to both the school's lacklustre attitude to self promotion, or Healey's profile that when I mentioned this to both staff and kids and they all said "who?"
It's the time of year where I renew home and car insurance and am swept away by the cost savings offered by my insurer, regarding my loyalty and clean claims record! (No, my bad, they want to gouge me for another 45%, despite all other providers undercutting the renewal by similar percentages.)
Haven't watched this match but from BlueSky comments it seems as if you are all getting exactly what you wanted - which was an opportunity to bitch and moan about Argentina a bit longer. The're the gift that keeps giving.

Given that she's been in Italy so long she has Italian citizenship, whilst I don't speak Italian, I think I'd be found out quite quickly.

Ok. I sort of get the Iranian tariff: "you cross through our water, you pay it or we shoot you." But I can't quite see how the US enforces this: "you make it into the Arabian sea safely, we tick your ship off and invoice your owner, then....?" What? They shoot you next time?

Rob Blundell@blundell.eu · 4w agoRemember how British BlueSky held off the full throated attacks on Ann Widdecombe when circs became apparent. But even then had generally been moderatly polite up to that point? American BlueSky appears to be offering no such grace to Lindsey Graham.
