You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Glad you’ve apologised. But you (and Cambridge, Liverpool and the GLP) could easily have known that denying obvious and easily verifiable plagiarism makes the racists look reasonable, the scandal more long-lasting and prominent, and Arday therefore more of a target, whatever your intentions were.

An investigation found that O'Reilly had plagiarised an undergrad's work, but decided this was just negligence, and he kept his job. This has attracted far less publicity than Prof Arday's case

Citing someone a few places in your dissertation doesn't mean it isn't plagiarism if you then proceed to copy (without quotation marks or citation) thousands of words of their work elsewhere in the dissertation.
Some of those digging into Arden seem to have terrible motivations. And I can see the impulse to reflexively defend him for that reason. But doing so – and defending the 'wrong' person in the wrong way – feels like it could end up even more damaging for black academics. Awful mess.
