I *might* be getting into libellous territory here but is Kathy Smith (“It’s Taking Too Long”) the same person as Cathy Smith, Band-aid, inspiration for Lightfoot’s “Sundown”, and the person who later admitted to providing John Belushi with the speedball that killed him?

I rarely enthuse about individual performances on screen but Sissy Spacek in Terence Malick’s Badlands (1973) is remarkable. A kind of stoic, defiant innocence. Only her second credited appearance.

Bear with me here… I’ve recently fallen pretty hard for Phil Collins’ Face Value, in all its Patrick Bateman-core cold nosed glory. But between the EWF horns and divorcee crooning, there’s loads of ambient-pop, midi-jazz and slightly fourth world stuff going which feels very in vogue right now.

Finally watched Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain (I know, I know, a million head-points lost…) and it was everything I hoped it would be and more. Never seen anything quite like it. Incredibly shots/WTF moments literally every 20 seconds. Not sure how anyone ever got it through when tripping.

If the wholesale transfer of billions in public money to party donors via sham PPE companies had happened in the States, people in the UK would be calling for impeachment. I’m not sure why this hasn’t happened on home turf?

It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"

Man, I hate that. Nobody thought about “making memories” as a conscious act until recently. I think you’re right though, it’s a euphemism for “taking photos for Insta”.

Tech scepticism is healthy and correct but sometimes change is good. Not having to the do the will it/won’t it balance it at juuuuust the right angle Lightning cable routine anymore is progress.

I was quietly escorted out of an upmarket branch of Toast once for describing their menswear as “a bit too Monty Don for me” perhaps a little too loudly. I didn’t mean it negatively, I’m not quite ready for tasteful moleskin utility jackets and wide leg elephant cord chinos just yet.

Monty Don singing ‘no more heroes’ very stridently, in quite a posh voice. I woke up with it in my head. ‘Whatever happened to…those *heroes*’ etc

I’m disappointed that Boy George has emerged as a Zionist genocide denier for obvious reasons but also as there’s an excellent picture of my Grandma from, I presume, ‘84 or ‘85 in fancy dress as BG, which is now sullied for me.

Issue 2 of “Old Survivor” about to go public. “Tall Tales. Public Beefs. Bad Poetry. Incantations. Love Letters” is the rough remit. It’s mostly me (and some pals) writing about music and providing an outlet for some cool old graphic design stuff.

Lovely long piece in @theguardian.com on the recent resurgence of fanzines. @msclairebiddles.bsky.social has squeezed an impressive number of current fanzines in there... including mine. Click here to have a read: www.theguardian.com/music/2026/j...

I’ll be holding the fort at Word of Mouth, Santa Eulalia, Ibiza next Tuesday 28th July. Doing my Hippie Balearica thing, imagining what the beatniks, hippies and outlaws who predated the emergence of Clubland might have been grooving to.

Very castaway/pirate summer over here. Ear pierced, bought some Jesus sandals, books about beatnik Ibiza, “The Beach”, Romancing The Stone, The Dharma Bums, white denim cut offs. Sudden interest in Santana. Hemp papers. Oakenfold remix of “Close To Me”.
