A long thread of a folded piece of paper with some stamps and ink on it: I was born in Rhodesia to parents of Dutch origin. My father died there (then Zimbabwe) in 1995. Recently, while tidying up, I came across this empty envelope among some of my dad’s things.
On this day in 1920, the cargo ship West Aleta, carrying 15,000 barrels of wine, sank off the coast of Terschelling. Salvaging the wine took 9 months. Dutch beachcombers had a great time, they all got drunk. Of the 35,000 barrels, only 15,000 were officialy reported as recovered!
