Nichole Ghoulbell - Host of BODIES OF HORROR

@bodiesofhorror.bsky.social

Bodies of Horror is a bi-weekly podcast that looks at horror through the lens of disability. Proud member of the Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad.

Leaving the theatre after my first watch, I couldn’t shake the feeling of how the scenes between Bear and Nikki at home had me thinking of the shame and pain I felt in past relationships of being a “burden” on my partner due to my disability. Let’s unpack.

Curry Barker’s OBSESSION is one of the most-talked about horror movies of the year, and @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social couldn’t resist getting in on the fun. Here she’s looking at the film through a lens of caring for a partner with additional support needs – and the impact it can have.

Judy gave up her own home to be able to keep this theater in her family and running. You can get another place to live but you can’t get another theater, she said. The margins are razor thin to keep it alive, and a plumbing crisis like this is is catastrophic. Please help a theater live!!

CALL FOR AID! The beloved Gardena Cinema had a pipe burst and flood their amazing theater! Judy Kim owns this and runs it all herself. It’s all volunteer powered. And she keeps it open thru sheer force of will and show needs our help with repairs. Anything welcome! www.zeffy.com/en-US/donati...

This move upset me but it upset me in ways I was not anticipating. I’ll be thinking about this movie, and Alicia, for a BERY long time.

Today on #AOASPodSquad: @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social discusses CRAZY OLD LADY (2025) “Hagsploitation, or narratives that root themselves in “crazy old woman” tropes, can be be a lot of fun. They can also inspire a lot of cringe, particularly as we deal with the realities of aging and disability.”

Finally the story of MY Damien. A teen that needs a cool five seconds of angst at the beach to accept his fate as the Antichrist. 18/10 no notes.

In case you missed it: a new episode of @podandthependulum.bsky.social on DAMIEN - OMEN II (drop the "The" - it's cleaner) in which @mikesnoonian.bsky.social, @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social, and I discuss the second film in OMEN franchise! Find it NOW wherever podcasts are sold: bit.ly/4sdLGox

What better time to do @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social’s 1st revisit than with the 1992 classic, DR GIGGLES? This film has had a piece of Nichole's heart since childhood when she used it to talk about disability with friends. Now, decades later, the film packs more nuance than even she remembered.

Yep. First episode of 2026. Countdown of favorite horror films I saw in 2025, with a sly shoutout to Novocaine as an “honorable mention.”

Today on the #AOASPodSquad: Welcome to @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social’s 1st episode of 2026! This is a look at some of the horror films Nichole found particularly unsettling, moving, poignant – and/or just plain fun – in 2025.

Adore @glitterburrito.bsky.social and ALL of her content - there is something so incredibly lovely about peeling about back the layers and discovering the heartbeat behind folks and they things (people, places, and things) they cherish. Great list and has me feeling all positive and appreciative.

NEW EPISODE ALERT! And one with maybe some of my hottest takes? A cool time talking about “pretty privilege” and how the gremlins were NOT the problem in that town.

Anatomy of a Scream@anatomyofascream.bsky.social · 8mo ago

Today on #AOASPodSquad: @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social chats about holiday classic #Gremlins (1984), but Nichole is keeping the discussion centered on disability, caregiving, and failed systems of care.

Sometimes you work with cast or crew just once. Other times you make 5 movies with the same person. So instead of saying goodbye, on the last day of shooting, many of us say “See you on the next one.” Today, I don’t want to say goodbye, so let me just say, PJ, my friend, see you on the next one.

NEW EPISODE ALERT. I got to (somewhat) put on my former theatre major hat and chat about Taymor’s phenomenal adaptation of Shakespeare’s TITUS. Arguably Bill’s most brutal and bloody work, we see how bodily autonomy and mutilation make the political personal.

Tomorrow on #AOASPodSquad: @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social returns to discuss the fucked up family dynamics at the center of TITUS

An older white man in a cake-covered helmet

NEW EPISODE!! So excited to talk about this film. I like the vibes a lot but we are going to go deep on those ageist tropes, and the…interesting?…things it has to say about caregiving.

Anatomy of a Scream@anatomyofascream.bsky.social · 11mo ago

Today on #AOASPodSquad: @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social examines Ti West’s 2009 film THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, a pitch-perfect 70’s/80’s throwback that uses a familiar caregiver premise to pinpoint the perils of aging, caring for a loved one, and dependence.

NEW EPISODE DAY! Do you like the “disabled-as-villain” trope, but with hot sauce? Do you like Oliver Platt playing, as always, a psychologist? Do you wonder if there is hierarchy of disabled kids? Well…

Today on #AOASPodSquad: How bad can a movie with Naomi Watts be? 2016’s SHUT IN may have you rethinking that. @bodiesofhorror.bsky.social looks at how this movie adopts horror tropes at the expense of portraying mental health issues and physical disabilities with any real nuance or care.
