Today I visited the memorial to the "Comfort Women" at St. Mary's Square in Chinatown in San Francisco. The memorial consists of two sets of statues, one featuring three young women/girls dressed in the 1930s-style clothing of China, Korea, and the Philippines, representing the hundreds of thousands of young women and girls who were kidnapped by the Japanese army during World War II, enslaved by the military, and forced to perform sex work for the soldiers in what were euphemestically called "comfort stations."
