In the mid-20th century, auto and oil interests bought up electric streetcar systems across the US and systematically replaced them with bus routes and paved roads, funneling commuters toward private cars.
I’ve seen in two culture /higher ed magazines recently the claim that the printing press engendered a crisis of authority at universities bc anyone could publish what they wanted and people could learn things without universities. This is not true.

A fun image processing distraction today -- how to clean up the noisy background of a photo of a microfilm of a medieval manuscript? Thread, in which I use Photoshop, but similar tools are available in GIMP and other image processing software.

It’s fascinating to me how so many of the casual comments about Emily Wilson having the temerity to critique Nolan’s film revolve around what she’s making from sales of her translation. As if the transactional element is a de facto check on her right to have opinions and express them.
Every so often I teach someone how to spin yarn on a spindle. And I always tell them that the first yarn you make will not be good yarn, and it's not meant to be, because right now you are not making wool into yarn, you're making yourself into a spinner.

Not a stunt, but a desperate need to control the narrative.
