last book in the series! it’s so hard to recommend Terra Ignota bc it’s hard and weird and parts are kind of an impenetrable slog, but the last book is so worth it. here are some gorgeous words on the comforts of reading in times of change, #booksky

"It was Cicero who kept me going. I seem to feel them with me, every time I cycle past the Rostra and the Senate House, and Voltaire too, our Zeroeth Anonymous, warm ghosts who offer smiles in my mind’s eye, and kind squeezes to my mind’s shoulder, and tell me we have bested harder foes." — Ada Palmer, Perhaps the Stars (2021)"I went outside to sit in the dark and hate. But there on the stones beside me were my patient ghosts, Voltaire and Cicero. Look where you are, they seemed to say. Rome burned before, but we rebuilt it. We burned it again, because we’re bad at this, but we rebuilt it again. Paris, we’ve burned and rebuilt Paris." — Ada Palmer, Perhaps the Stars (2021)"Not the technical today that cold calendars count, but the shared today that text creates, the now when Martin wrote his words and the now in which we read them married across time’s diaspora." — Ada Palmer, Perhaps the Stars (2021)

wow i’m really getting there with the commonplace book. this is a pleasant way to spend a few days in advance of a funeral that will likely be intense

idk why PP management balked at PPG’s demands bc 1) they all seem in line with propublica’s ethos as an organization, and 2) they make me say “holy shit it sounds like it’d rule to work there.“ good for the workers, there’s power in a union!
