"Cave" is a dangerous frame. It implies that democrats support the lives and privacy of trans people but simply lack the courage to act on that conviction. We've seen from multiple democrats (Moulton, Acton, Gluesenkamp-Perez, Newsom) unprovoked opposition to trans people and willingness to say so.

When I came out you transitioned and became the girl version of yourself. You might not like that person, you might wish you were prettier or nicer or stronger or less freeze-y when people threatened you, but so what. Dissatisfaction with yourself was seen as an authentic part of being a girl.

Cis people, with a very small number of notable excpetions, simply do not see trans people as worth taking risks to defend. That's how it is and we have to proceed with the assumption that this is how any cis led org will behave when the rubber hits the road.

I think there is a meaningful difference in life experience and outlook between those of us who were openly queer in some form before HAART and those who weren't. It's deeply buried but AIDS trauma is still out there. It means nothing currently happening to trans people is fully a surprise. Shit

The most frustrating aspect of the Amy Acton "discourse" is how incapable the pro-action centrists are at articulating the policy goals that Acton would advance. Saying "a republican would be worse" is empty when you can't explain what, exactly, a democrat would accomplish that is better.
When someone says "because bad education" or "because the media is biased" or (double-whammy) "media literacy" they accept the proposition that the woods should be full of bear traps and society's only role is explaining to children what a trap looks like. After that, it's personal responsibility.

If I ever teach another class of EMTs I will start with this image. There are many interpretations of the life and death of Kevin Carter, but to me he's a reminder that you cannot greet others horror with professional detachment and quiet dignity. Your own maybe, but not other people's. Scream.
