Week 2 of recreating an early modern #sugar🍡sculpture in our ArtLab! My art history students used a 16th-c. #French recipe, casting real fruits🍎🍐🍇in clay molds and pouring in🫗cane sugar. These edible artworks once adorned court #banquets🍴 across Europe and Asia, blending confectionery and sculpture.

He used it to take Europe’s ruling elites — from Maurice of Nassau to Elizabeth of Bohemia — racing along the #beach at #Scheveningen near The Hague. Just managed to catch the “Metamorphoses” exhibition @rijksmuseum.bsky.social before it closed. This Flemish-French #millefleurs #tapestry was my personal highlight: two exquisitely woven #Narcissuses, lost in each other’s reflection — and in the riotous floral abundance of the #palace #garden.

Students designed their own festive #arts and #architecture for an early modern #ommegang from the Low Countries. This helped them gain insight into the organisation of the event: what artists and artisans to commission? What materials to use? Towards what effect? Look at some of these beauties👇

Flicking through the city records of early 17th-century #Antwerp! For 1631–32, I found payments to the Jesuits, who created a spinning theater for an #ommegang 🎭; to craftsmen for the 'arranging of [#parade] wagons'; and to civic militias who removed #drunk passersby along the routes of entries🍺.

Yesterday I was with students at the rijksmuseum.bsky.social in Amsterdam to study early modern ritual arts: from a marble reconstruction of a funeral #procession and a silver ceremonial #chain to ceremonial #glasses and a banquet #automaton from Augsburg that could serve #wine to guests.

First course of the new period! On fleeting #arts and #architecture: from #papier-mâché to #sugar in the early modern period. I organised for students a showcase of #festival books and objects, many of which aimed to record these #ephemeral artefacts for posterity - including sugar #banquets🧁

Starting in October, the #Louvre will begin a 4-year #restoration of the 24 paintings Rubens created (1622–1625) for his beloved patron, Maria de #Medici — from her birth in Florence to her grand arrival in Marseille. The Richelieu wing will be transformed into one big restoration atelier!

#Utrecht’s main square, the #Neude, across from my office, is being excavated! In 1540, it hosted Charles V’s Joyous #Entry, marked by triumphal arches and obelisks celebrating him as world ruler. All made from papier-mâché, however, so little hope archaeologists will find any trace of them today😉

Developed by our #ArtLab (Sanne Frequin en Daantje Meuwissen), the experience transported them high into the vaulted ceiling of the Great Church of #Naarden.
