The modern world in old Ladybird books. The diesel. “It is sad to think that the last steam locomotive to be built in Britain left the workshops in March, 1960” Artist: Robert Ayton (1961)
The strange stone creatures that climb and cavort the churches of the country make a fabulous bestiary. They function less as lithic lookouts, more as a telling of the mediaeval mind. What filled it with such oddities? What did the stone carvers see? – Sir John Betjeman, 1969

1/x Two of the best-known coats on any high street began as working kit for sailors on cold decks. Both carry names from my little corner of the North Sea: Duffel, a small town near Antwerp, and the Dutch word "pij". The story of the duffel coat and the peacoat. #maritimehistory

I forgot to attach the pictures of the mascots mentioned in the post below on the 'funny' Onix Marfy. There was a choice of figures - one seemingly inspired by the iconic Manneken Pis statue in Brussels, the other a more modest praying cherub.
The Onix Marfy was described on the cover of its Japanese brochure as 'funny', but whether that meant comical or peculiar is open to debate. A '90s retro kei car of a type popular in Japan, its main distinguishing feature was the Rolls Royce-like grille, with a choice of amusing mascots. #weirdcarbs
