Going through some old Kansas legislative handbooks. Hadn't realized how close we got to having the initiative, it passed the Senate and was 8 votes short in the House. (Also, southeast Kansas was electing socialists in this era!)

PLATFORM PROMISE
"Two years ago all parties in Kansas declared in favor of the initiative and referendum, and pledged the people to submit the necessary amendment to make it a part of our fundamental law. The Democratic members of the legislature kept the faith. The Republicans violated it. We again renew our pledge of two years ago and again declare to the people of Kansas that a Democratic legislature will submit for their approval a constitutional amendment, making the initiative and referendum a part of our fundamental law."

PARTY PERFORMANCE
Senate Resolution No. 15 submitting an amendment to the constitution for this purpose went to a conference committee and a report was agreed upon. The senate adopted the report. The house rejected it. Every Democrat but one in the house voted for the conference report. Every Republican but one voted against the conference report. See House Journal, pages 657, 748 and 773 "The Democratic members of the legislature kept the faith."

Shows about fictional genius comedians usually don’t work because you have to be a genius comedian yourself to write their material, and Aaron Sorkin wasn’t. Marvelous Mrs Maisel had the same problem. Ironically, 30 Rock did have genius writers, and they chose to make TGS bad because that’s funnier

Wichita State researcher tests voting machine counts, paying for hand recount of ballots from the Aug. 3 primary election.

Just today, I got a text from an anti-Hamilton PAC and a Marshall canvasser knocking my door. The primary was last week, Republicans are not taking this senate race for granted.

Happy Election Day! Early in-person voting is done, and the numbers from the SOS this morning should be nearly final (some counties are stragglers on reporting). We had 162k, which is well above Aug 24 (63k), but below the historically high Aug 22 (215k). ike-lab.com/dailyev_2608... #ksleg

advance voting chart. in person steadily climbed and is at 162k, mail sent leveled out at 64k, mail returned had a slow climb and is at 40k

It's a bummer. My logs say @ike-lab.com has gotten more than 100,000 unique visits this month. Our big election spike in 2024 was just under 5,000. The August primary is not getting 20x the attention. Also, there are a lot of 404s looking for WordPress files and directories, which IKE doesn't use.

fascinating story from one of the best movie data guys about one of the best movie data guys stephenfollows.com/p/what-just-...

There are big primaries for both parties, including for an open governor's seat. Maybe even bigger is a constitutional amendment to move the state supreme court from a merit/retention system to nonpartisan elections - Republicans are looking to push the court more conservative with the change.
