Cybersecurity, Battletech, and Sci-Fi.

I wrote in an internal memo some months ago that I thought security and productivity will never be compatible when it comes to LLMs because a properly constrained LLM will not offer any productivity gain over a human equivalent. I think that assessment will remain true for a long time.

Cybersecurity researchers complain that Claude Fable's guardrails are too strict, rejecting "innocuous tasks" like reading blog posts or performing code reviews (Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai/TechCrunch) Main Link | Techmeme Permalink

The Timberwolf is my all time favorite 'mech going way back to the mid 1990s. It's aesthetically perfect and the chassis is highly optimized. The Prime is far from perfect, but the LRM20s give it some dangerous burst damage. The A config is a deadly Warhammer clone. #battletech

Just realized I can easily order paperback books here (EU rather than AU) so it's time for some catch up on the Battletech reading list! Fox Tales ✅ Without Question ✅ A Question Of Survival ✅ The Longest Day ✅ (How did I miss new content set in 3050!?)

I love this snippet from the Oxide blog on LLM use because it neatly encapsulates something I had trouble expressing regarding the constant and increasing pressure to do more cyber threat intelligence with LLMs: How can anybody value analysis that takes more effort to read than to write?

HackingLZ, Flangvik and Fabian describing CrowdStrike with OverWatch as "an S-tier pain in the ass for sure" is a nice endorsement :) Also today I discovered offsec has twitch streams!

@davidaeubanks.bsky.social I've tracked you all the way down here to say I read Life Artificial many years ago and loved it. Changed the way I thought about science fiction and I think it turns out you were ahead of the times when it comes to envisioning AI. That's all, just wanted to share.

Got a good game in yesterday, our last for some time as I will be relocating away for a while. Stinger, Centurion, Catapult, Awesome (4,000 BV) came off worse against a highly spec'd Griffin, Wolverine, and Warhammer (5,200 BV). Plenty of fun included DFA, melee, and surprise gyro hits.

I am 2/3 through the Imperial Radch series by @annleckie.com and loving it. The Presger translators must have been a lot of fun to write, because I'm thoroughly enjoying them whenever they appear. "Don't dismember your sister!" "Not a drink? But it's a liquid!?" "Why do the fish... do this?" 10/10
