Public forum with leading scientists at #paleopathology2026. What can the past, through archaeological remains, tell us about the future?
Adam "Ben" Rohrlach

Australian mathematician/statistician living in Leipzig, but working in ancient DNA research at the MPI-EVA. It's always beer o'clock somewhere. Personal homepage: https://ben-rohrlach.owlstown.net/
I can only recommend publishing in GENETICS. A wonderful editorial experience, and a career highlight. #GENETICS #ancientDNA

I had a great time chatting about all things ancient DNA, maths and networks on the @therandomsample.bsky.social The Random Sample podcast with Jonathan Tuke and Haripriya Sridharan. If you're interested, listen to the podcast wherever you normally do, or via this link: lnkd.in/gYXZQtB5
I want to contribute to science through peer review, and I regularly do. But having just received a request to review a very technical paper, from a reputable journal, but with a 10-day due date, I had to refuse. Nobody with a full-time job can properly review a paper in that time frame.

As a statistician, publishing in @significancemag.bsky.social is a career highlight, and I still got to write about ancient DNA. See our article on using network regression to explore relatedness and kinship in ancient cemeteries! doi.org/10.1093/jrss...

What does ancient DNA reveal about biological kinships? Read this exciting study in #GENETICS that used Exponential Random Graph models for correlates of relatedness, identifying evidence for female exogamy and the existence of an elite class in ancient Avar. buff.ly/aSPLOTg @brohrlach.bsky.social
Are you screening your ancient DNA study for chromosomal aneuploidies? Or looking for a new way to call genetic sex? Regardless of sequencing data type? Our Bayesian method (implemented in R as RChASM) has now been published in Bioinformatics: doi.org/10.1093/bioi...
Are you interested in doing a PhD in ancient human genetics, focusing on the Y and MT haplogroups of Finland? Working with Dr Ronan O'Sullivan, Prof. Päivi Onkamo and me, which is a team I'm looking forward to working in. Based in Turku, Finland. ats.talentadore.com/apply/doctor...

Want to check your ancient DNA study for chromosomal aneuploidies? RChASM is now available for R, to screen for autosomal and sex chromosomal aneuploidies, such as Down syndrome on data from 0.0014X coverage. We also wrote a step-by-step tutorial with examples: jonotuke.github.io/RChASM/artic...

Excited to share our study in GENETICS on exploring biological kinship in ancient DNA data sets (doi.org/10.1093/gene...). Using ERGMs to find variables that correlate with relatedness, and applied to 6th-9th century Avar, we find evidence for female exogamy and the existence of an elite class.

As I told the CNN, without details and data it is not possible to assess the claims. More importantly, the scientific value of this media campaign, balanced against the possible stigmatization of individuals with these real conditions today, is highly questionable. edition.cnn.com/2025/11/13/s...

Just catching Svante Pääbo, a Nobel laureate, give a talk. That's a cracking start to the day.
Wow, giving a talk at the Royal Society in London is such a thrill. I'm going to see so many amazing talks, and hopefully not take away from the overall quality with my own. Just an amazing place for science and history.
I cannot say this strongly enough, but to the scientific journals out there: please stop making AI assistants for reading papers the default.

To be clear, I don't support the US strikes at all. The intelligence FROM THE US categorically denied that Iran were even close to nukes, and US leaders are prolific liars of the laziest kind. This reeks of Iraq and their phantom weapons of mass destruction. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06...
