Worth stressing that studies like this would not be possible without archaeological units, archaeological trusts, heritage centres and museums who excavate and look after collections, many of which continue to be underfunded and/or neglected. New technologies will continue to bring new insights.

New preprint led by Hrushikesh Loya, me, and Simon Myers where we introduce GhostBuster! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... The idea is to find all the different ways a target individual relates to reference groups in genealogies, to "bust the ghosts" in our ancestry.

This frozen "Mystery Mummy" was found in the Klondike permafrost, and is likely several tens of thousands of years old!! But what species is this? We don't know! What is your best guess? We have a sample in our lab, and are working on sequencing it's DNA, so can soon tell you who got it right 😀

we made a tool! ybyra is a lightweight, flexible Y-chromosome haplogroup caller. It is faster, easier to tune and more robust than other tools particularly for low-coverage or ancient DNA data. And it has lots of detailed output – including plots! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
Last week we had a great meeting on "Ancient genomes: perspectives on human biology and medicine" at the @royalsociety.org and the @crick.ac.uk. It was an amazing set of talks and posters. Thanks to the @gensocuk.bsky.social, co-host @janetk.bsky.social and all participants for a great day!
Specifically, the calling of genotypes and thus the calculation of polygenic scores in the degraded DNA is not straight-forward, leading to questions about the reliability of high profile results (eg www.nature.com/articles/s41... ).

Putting aside the deeper issues of why this analysis was done and how it has been promoted, the choice to broadcast a tv show before releasing a preprint should make people skeptical of the results. How can one be sure of their scientific claims?
As I told the CNN, without details and data it is not possible to assess the claims. More importantly, the scientific value of this media campaign, balanced against the possible stigmatization of individuals with these real conditions today, is highly questionable. edition.cnn.com/2025/11/13/s...
