"The Instrumentation Lab at MIT was seeking people to develop software to “send man to the moon.” Intrigued by the challenge, Hamilton applied, and was hired as the first programmer for the Apollo project at MIT, as well as the first female programmer in the project."

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Possibly my least fav AI "enthusiast" is the speculative fiction writer or futurist who has created a brand of riding the next wave and who reflexively engages with AI so they can look like they're hip to the cool, so to speak.

POD publishers (possibly fake?) have totally flooded used/antiquarian/OOP book offerings on Amazon Japan and Abe Books and it appears it’s nigh impossible to find a real copy of any books I’m looking for. I’ve never seen anything like this before… 😬

#worldkidlitmonth Miyuki Miyabe (1960- ) began her career as a mystery writer; she won the Japan Mystery Writers Association Prize for her debut novel. Most of her work is still in the mystery genre, where she broke new ground for women with the publication of her 1992 novel, All She Was Worth.

A color photograph of Miyuki Miyabe speaking earnestly. She has bobbed hair and is wearing stylish yellow glasses and a striped purple sweater over a collared shirt.

The 100 articles thing inspired institutions to cut our access (including my own and also my alumni access, which was my back up, and with austerity measure in place now, neither are coming back any time soon). So now I will get 10 articles a month? This doesn’t work for research. Ugh.

An "update" to JSTOR’s free reading program: they're downgrading access from 100 free articles/month to just 10. Access to academic writing is being whittled down, bit by bit. about.jstor.org/blog/an-upda...

How Drexel can even call themselves a university after running the Academy of Natural Sciences so far into the red they insist they have to close it to the public!? It’s a 200 year old institution. It doesn’t need to be profitable, it needs to be sustained and accessible.

Just a heads up. I was able to schedule my COVID vaccine appointment. Online it may ask “do you have a condition that puts you at high risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 virus.” Click yes and it will allow you to schedule an appointment. No questions asked. No proof required. Pass it on.

I think they should do Halloween Horror Afternoons for folks who want to contend with smaller crowds and be in bed at a reasonable hour. If that means less high-impact mazes, fine. Give me the MURDER, SHE WROTE maze where you are surprised by guest star killers and pause for tea halfway through.

When I was in college I was hired as bilingual staff at a Japanese cafe (Cornellians iykyk). The owner formerly worked at Nobu and taught me how to make sushi, onigiri, etc. He used to let us make stuff with the leftover rice at closing. I miss his avocado rolls. He had the best pickled ginger.
