"Making fees voluntary, at least nominally, could be a way out of the impasse, although an implied threat of Iranian attacks could mean shippers would be unlikely to risk transit without paying."

Among the things that threatens to drive me nuts if I think too much about it is how much (of taxpayers') money has gone to buying police vehicles. There are so many of them, so many varieties (of vans, cars, motorbikes, etc.), and out on the road and/or parked outside "yellow" shops.

So, ~HK$165bn (US$22bn) over the last 6 years…for a population of 7.5 million.
