Funny story, I was working on a PR for Cargo through WSL, and one of the tests was "make sure these weird file names don't break stuff". After I was done I tried to delete the folder and I couldn't because File Explorer refused to delete files named "com"/etc., so back into WSL...

Turns out you can actually create file names with backslashes and other forbidden characters in them in WSL on a Windows file system

The one thing that's keeping me from extreme depression is waiting for the upgrade kit so I can upgrade the screen, trackpad, and battery on my 12th gen while I wait for RAM prices to come back to earth. Oh well, at least I have the Pebble to look forward to.

This makes me so mad because everything in the Framework Laptop 13 Pro is a huge game changer. They made a Linux laptop with MacBook Pro quality and insane battery life and then got kicked in the nads by RAM companies. Look what they took from us.

the incentive of learning how to use good software is that it frees you from being stuck with bad software. also all the good software these days is free. this argument only makes sense if you loathe to learn, which is insane to me. i can't imagine prefering the torment nexus to reading the manual

Beef and dairy have huge environmental impacts, definitely more than data centers on renewable energy. But this is beyond hyperbolic. A whole cow costs ~$5,000 including profit for the farmer and a butcher to process it. What model cost $5,000 to train, including a **profit** margin?

Beef is far worse for the environment than AI, and it's not even close. Training a new AI model uses about the same resources as raising one (1) beef cow.

Hot take: frontier models are impossible to make open source for the foreseeable future. The resources required to just store the training data alone makes it entirely unapproachable to all but a select minority. So the only useful "open source" models are just open weight, which is just freeware.

Manifest V3 isn't the end of ad blockers, but it is a significant blow to their utility. Limiting blocklists to 330,000 domains and providing no way to dynamically update them without just updating the whole extension makes it trivial to make an unblockable ad provider if you can afford 20 domains.

everything related to this blogpost is absolutely fucking braindead. No, Patrick, The rollout of Manifest V3 will not kill off adblockers, all it does is prevent extensions from modifying page content on the fly, which is good to prevent stuff like MITM extensions that maliciously replace links.

I don't know if anyone else is watching From, but I'd love to talk to you about it. Not here though, we must first walk to another location to continue this dialogue.
