The beep from the intercom on her desk drew Samantha’s gaze away from her computer. “Yes, Katrina?” “Your cousins are here to see you, Ms. Snow.” Samantha frowned. She didn’t have any cousins. “Send them in please.” She tapped a button on her keyboard to lock her screen. Straightening her steely blue blazer, she swiveled in her chair, turning to meet whoever was about to walk into her office. The door opened seconds later to admit three burly men. Samantha smiled politely at the secretary and motioned for the men to sit as the door closed behind them. One accepted her offer—the one in charge then. The other two remained standing. She catalogued the differences out of habit. Button down black shirt, grey suit and pants. He wore a thick gold chain around his neck with a symbol she didn’t recognize. The two behind him might as well have been twins. Matchingblack turtlenecks, black pants, and cropped hair. How her secretary had bought the cousin lie was beyond her. “Gentlemen. To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?” she asked, folding her hands on her desk. The man who had seated himself reached into the coat pocket of his well-worn suit and drew out a bulky padded envelope. He tossed it on the mahogany desk in front of her. The thick envelope came to rest inches from her fingertips. She didn’t look at it. “There’s a rather interesting video you should see,” said the man, leaning back and resting his ankle on his knee. Samantha pushed the envelope back across her desk with a single finger and leaned back in her chair, taking on a relaxed pose. “Whoever you have on that, it isn’t me.” This wasn’t the first time someone had tried to bribe or blackmail her. She doubted it would be the last. The man gave her a pitying smile. “Oh Ms. Snow, this isn’t a video of you.” There was a pause as the man’s smile twisted into an unpleasant grin.“It’s your brother, James.” For half a second Samantha forgot how to breathe. And just like that, the men who had been an annoyance became a threat. Samantha’s features fell into a practiced blank canvas as she picked up the envelope. A look of confidence settled on the man’s face as she opened it. She squashed the urge to wince as she pulled out a mini tablet. It lit up at her touch, showing a freeze frame of a young man—tousled blond hair stuck to his face—tied in a chair. He was blindfolded. Even with the image frozen and blurry, she could make out the small but distinct tattoo of a thorny vine with roses on her brother’s chest. A slip of paper fell to her desk from between the photographs: Do what they say and your brother lives. I’ll be watching. She tapped the Play button, steeling herself. Her brother turned his head as someone—no, the man that was sitting in front of her now—removed the blindfold. “What the hell is this?” her brother asked. “Where am I?” The man back handed him, James’ head snapping back from the blow.

Finished another chapter in my hacker novel and they did... things 🌶️🥵❤️‍🔥 (finally). They still had their quirky mannerisms throughout and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Now I can focus on things going sideways again so I can wrap up the book (soonish)! 😅

Just finished Spinning Silver. The last 1/3 was really good and I wish the first 2/3 had been equally engaging but there were a lot of character threads to develop. Overall I liked it and I'm glad the ending surprised me. I would read other books by the same author. #Booksky
