EU affairs for Spain’s Prime Minister, 2024-2025. Before that, CER in London and Brussels. Now in Rwanda, thinking what comes next. Still unsuccessfully trying to head EU things.
The most important thing about Schengen is that it’s a shared border without a state behind it. Rather like the euro: a currency without one either.
No deberíamos volver atrás.
From earlier today. With some rather prescient comments from yours truly, if I may. www.spiegel.de/ausland/span...

A great essay by Charles Grant, where he dares questioning the zeitgeist: the going may be tough, but there are reasons to be optimistic about Europe. Europe’s future: Grounds for hope? - Annual report 2025 www.cer.eu/about/annual...
Europe’s future: Grounds for hope? - Annual report 2025
The CER's annual report features an essay which analyses the many problems the EU faces, but concludes that it is not doomed.

Utterly late to this, but I am only at Merkel in her late 20s in ‘Freedom’ and this book is already teaching me more about the geopolitics of Europe over the past 20 years than any brainy conference or paper would.
Now that I finally got some time to sit down this year, I am at last diving into this. As a Brussels veteran, I’ve been wary to open it. I have always had a complicated relationship with Merkel’s European legacy. Wonder whether this book will help.
Ok, slightly revising this. Drove at rush hour for the first time today and the pixie thing looks like a piece of cake in comparison. More juicy updates like this one coming soon.
I moved to Africa. And I am growing out my pixie. No doubts as to which one of the two will be tougher.

Taking off to a new adventure kind of far away in a few minutes. More news coming soon!

Or a piece on how there are way too many men pulling the strings of power so the democratic deficit is not only a fallacy, but a phallacy. True fact, albeit an unintended one.
are you writing a piece on how the sui generis supra national / intra governmental thing called the EU is to navigate a world that has gone all binary?
True. Which is even more appalling, because it is a direct translation from French that makes even less sense in other languages.
And it can even be a phallacy, so it appeals to Gen Z and boost some TikTok algorithm
Keep up with me, because I am soon doing one of that awful ✨personal news✨ posts and will be heading to some place where having coined a European political science term that nobody understands will come in handy.
Did you mean “fallacy” or is that quite a racy double entendre?
As I cannot edit this. Of course I meant fallacy, although there is probably a case to bring feminism into this and apply the below term. Thanks @alanbeattie.bsky.social
This is what I have decided, just now, to call the democratic deficit phallacy and you should all be hearing from that in the next few months.

There is a motion of confidence (which should be called a motion of no confidence if we were speaking English in Brussels, but hey) against Ursula von der Leyen going on right now that you probably do not know and do not care about. And rightly so, because it will fail. But
