I am on holiday in a province not my own. Out for a walk, I noticed houses with lawn art based on the provincial flag. I wondered whether it was fascism or just small-town quaintness. Then I noticed the sculptures of black boys with fishing rods.

This reminds me, as I head out to move twins into first-year dorms, to turn off their location-sharing. My 18yos might well be indifferent, but it’s symbolically important for me to make that break.

My experience has been that every single request for a "chat" has come from a man who wants to tell me why I am wrong and he is right. So I offer a third suggestion: rather than a decade of resentment, rather than clearing the air, consider Letting It Go.
Ryan Cordell@ryancordell.org · 4w agoYour friendly reminder that when a faculty colleague says something that upsets you, it’s perfectly fine to ask them, directly, “hey can we have a coffee, chat & clear the air?” rather than burying the offense deep inside to fester with resentment & then erupt in a faculty meeting 10 years later

Working on a conference proposal in a discipline that's new to me and not confident if wordplay in presentation titles is the done thing. I fear not, but am not sure I'm capable of writing a straightforward title?!?
On the one hand, I'm on research leave so I'm not experiencing my Annual August Panic. On the other hand, my twins start uni in two different cities in about 3 weeks, so the difference in ambient household panic level is negligible. August solidarity to all students and teachers!
They remind you to be cautious about alcohol consumption when you've donated blood but I am here to report that drinking one's usual amount of coffee the next day is also a mistake. #jittery

This paper is so useful for my work, and it is exciting to me for a couple reasons. First, a disclaimer: I am almost entirely ignorant about psychometrics/sociometrics, so I am offering zero commentary on the quantitative argument at the core of the paper. 1/n

Catherine Anderson@candershamilton.bsky.social · 3mo agoFor today’s rainbows we go to the hosiery section. Unfortunately, like many retailers, Bombas has not put out a pride collection this year. But fortunately for me, I tend to make my clothes last a long time.
I just keep saying over and over, the point of a PhD is not for a dissertation to exist that didn’t previously exist. The point of a PhD is that a human has learned something.
