AI is often sold as perfect solutions to the "problem" of having to create captions and transcripts. That framing, of course, centers creators and producers over the people who actually rely upon the captions and transcripts. But there is no replacement for humans when making content accessible.

AI captions do not conform to #WCAG they usually require a lot of work to make them usable The highest-risk areas for real harm are: (1) named entities/numbers, (2) multi-speaker attribution, (3) timing/readability, and (4) hallucinated “corrections.” #deaf #multimedia #justsayin #a11y

I continue to maintain that Oxford commas and en/em dashes will remain a core part of our captioning style at @caption.plus. And frankly, the original input and insight we give as captioners and writers should speak for itself more than the flood of automated imitators can take away.

My work requires Oxford commas and em dashes and I hate that AI has made that appear as anything other than the work I'm literally supposed to be doing, and people actually believe it.
