the honorable one on The Lost Broadcasts, cohost of Get Cynical, words @ Little White Lies / Reverse Shot / rogerebert.com / Men's Health / Vinegar Syndrome, i have met two capybaras in real life
the real movie begins after you've seen One Night Only and you spend hours discussing the implications of its world with your friends. i had so, so many questions.
One Night Only has some of the most holistic mise en scene i’ve ever encountered. a feast for the eyes.

we millennials took a HUGE hit when the Alabama Arkansas song was going around last year. but with the new Zoomer Spider-Man using LCD Soundsystem in its marketing and TV on the Radio in the film proper i think it's safe to say we're back on top
haven't really been watching too many movies lately. not tickled by the indie stuff in the zeitgeist. i've been more into reading books and watching professional wrestling this summer
this guy was so good when he just made 20 minute videos about a weird roller coaster
2019 Defunctland video: "In 1989, the Walt Disney corporation was feeling the heat from the Six Flags Dick Smasher and wanted a one of their own" (20 mins) 2025 Defunctland video: (single very serious plaintive piano note) "Since the dawn of time... Man... Has always tried to eat a snack" (3 hours)
here's july's rodent roundup! featuring films from Koji Shiraishi and Sean Clements, a new kind of video game that i'm actually kind of a savant at, and a book review lightning round open.substack.com/pub/capybaro...
i keep saying this but the only way to make a boycott work is if it is coordinated and targeted. you can't just ambiently expect everyone to boycott every evil company indefinitely and then scream at people for not following it
i'm not on here enough to keep up on all the drama so i just learned that yesterday they dragged ken jennings into the street and beat him to death for playing wordle
if you've been enjoying The Prisoner on Criterion Channel, might i recommend Tsui Hark's first american feature Double Team starring JCVD and Dennis Rodman, the middle act of which is a loving homage to the show where Van Damme is trapped in Not The Village
first interaction i had with another human being that morning was spencer coming inside and saying "esther come out and see the turkeys!" and i got outside at the exact moment that one of them got flattened. an auspicious start to that day's shoot.
seeing a family of turkeys on the road and watching one of them just get fucking annihilated by a lady in her giant car : (
nah she was just trying to get a take off vis a vis her area of expertise and she assumed film criticism would be easy. if anyone else wrote that review i would say their editor did them a major disservice. it's just bad writing.
in July's free post on Rodent Reflections, i looked into Chris Nolan's aborted attempts to make a film adaptation of The Prisoner and tried to figure out both what that might look like and why he would even want to open.substack.com/pub/capybaro...
Jeezus… Fine… next time I’ll let the dog eat the flattened toad baking on the side of the road.
one would think she would feel more kinship with a writer who is deeply interested in technical showmanship at the expense of poetry and feeling
‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...
very stupid. "art" is the result of creative expression. you can quibble about whether a given work is good or not but if "cannot have been created for tawdry or commercial reasons" is part of the definition then you are going to necessarily exclude some of history's great masterpieces
Cinema can be art, but not all cinema is art. Some movies are entertainment, not that hard to understand.
this is the 4th AEW PPV i've watched since i started watching regularly and to the company's credit this double chain match is the first one i can remember seeing that just totally sucks
shot my feature film screen acting debut this morning, then met some friends for brunch and went to a pinball parlor where an actual pinball wizard complimented my innate skill on the flippers
he will spend eternity in the lake of fire for this. absolutely disgusting.
Per Shams Charania, LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.

my review of The Odyssey is up! 2400 words digging into Nolan’s psychologizing of myth, the bicameral mind, Zeus’ Law, “apparent magic,” and pigs open.substack.com/pub/capybaro...
"chris nolan is conservative" discourse made sense in like 2010 but taken in a modern context he's so obviously woke that it's not even worth discussing

i’ve returned from my convalescence with a late review of Evil Dead Burn, a bad new film in a series that i don’t even like yet somehow keeps tricking me anyway. open.substack.com/pub/capybaro...
