It’s worth pausing on the scale of Burnham’s social care pitch. This could be the biggest reform to health in England in a generation. A universal care system - effectively a second NHS - would be revolutionary. Just free personal care would be lifechanging for older and disabled people.

Look past the bigamy bit, and focus in on the idea that a man could earn enough money to financially support two families! At the same time tax was higher than it is now. Whilst in 2026 a household with two adults can often not earn enough to live well, let alone support a second family.

While bigamy was always unacceptable, it is amazing that 1970s incomes policy made it possible for two of my parents' male "friends". Whatever the current economic policy is has made it too expensive and you almost never hear about bigamy nowadays.

What if we championed and grew the foundations of our welfare state rather than continued to minimise them? It feels against the grain, but it's an ambition that we think deserves more support if we're ever to truly build a caring society.

(Not to mention the fact that, because there is no right to compassionate leave in this country apart from for dependents, quite a lot of sick notes are actually signing people off work because e.g. one of their parents has just died)

This is a great write up of an underreported story. (a) it's crazy that a minister responded "that's life" to a council in financial straits; (b) it's crazier still that £3m of extra funding will apparently fund so little care because the system is entirely run in private interests.
