The Supreme Court has granted limited Permission to Appeal in the Ammori / Palestine Action case. Permission granted on Ground 1 only. It’s not 100% clear what ‘ground 1’ refers to but it looks like permission has been granted on human rights compatibility ground. supremecourt.uk/cases/uksc-2...

No party should select as a candidate for any office someone with the past extremist convictions (in both senses) of the man Kemi Badenoch is backing. It makes no difference whether it's for a council, any devolved assembly, or Parliament. It's all public power of some kind.

Attorney General is a more important minister than is obvious outside government. Whenever she gives legal advice, that can decide or constrain policy on big international and UK issues from war, to tax, immigration and equality, EU relations—anything. Her legal advice really matters.

I gave Starmer wide latitude. He dragged Labour from the gutter, won big against the odds and pursued policies I thought generally sensible and reasonable—a marked contrast to his opponents in England who (other than the LibDems) are extreme and unreasonable.

The coda to the Lady Chief Justice's judgment the Attorney General's appeal against non-custodial sentences against the teenage perpetrators of the Fordingbridge Rape Case is worth reading. She is incredibly critical of MPs and the media for the public commentary. www.judiciary.uk/judgments/x-...

179. It is a matter of significant concern to us that these events have become a matter of intense public debate before the legal process has concluded. Ms Wade KC and Mr Evans, on behalf of X, put the matter this way: “…Regrettably, inaccurate reporting has encouraged inappropriate commentary within the media with inevitable consequences. [X] has felt unable to leave his home for fear of being the victim of discrimination and/or violence. The trial Judge has been wrongly vilified by the public. It is submitted that if any of the persons involved in this process (however great or small) had spent even a day in Court during the trial and witnessed firsthand the impeccable conduct of [the judge] throughout these proceedings they would almost certainly be embarrassed.” 180. The dangers of public comment by members of Parliament, the media and others on matters still proceeding through the courts and tribunals are self- evident, the most obvious being the risk of proceeding on the basis of an inaccurate or incomplete understanding of the facts (and the law).
