Trapped in a Suburban Hellhole

Looking to get out of the burbs Abortion is Healthcare #MedicareForAll Sometimes travel, sometimes tech. Confirmed views of US capitalism during 2008 bailout (yeah, it ain't no free hand)

We've had a million news cycles about the freakout from one guy who worked at Anthropic for 5 minutes saying we're all gonna die, but almost *nothing* about an actual multi-millionaire tech leader calling for an ethnic cleansing against the Roma people — an act which has happened in living memory!

27-year-old British researcher Jacob Coxon quit Anthropic on Tuesday. He explains to The Washington Sun why now.

Dear Democrats, You will never be able to triangulate your way through racism/sexism/transphobia, because pushing a lighter, politer form of bigotry is always a lose-lose proposition. The bigots want the uncut stuff, while normal people aren't drawn to cowards who sell out. Stand your ground.

Trump's attacks on our civil liberties didn't come out of nowhere. The groundwork for his Orwellian surveillance state was laid by the post-9/11 PATRIOT Act. Only one Senator at the time had the foresight to see what it would unleash.

James Talerico made it clear he would work with Republicans against gender-affirming care for trans kids and what did this spirit of compromise get him? Being called a pedophile tonight by JD Vance. Again, WHEN will Democrats learn there’s no appeasing these bigots??

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com · yesterday

Vance on Talarico: "A guy that age who was so obsessed and focused on transgender children, I don't know about you, but I never want to see that guy's web browser history. It's not a good place."

The OpenAI incident report is still bothering me, you can yap all you want about monitoring, permissions, sandboxing, escalation, evaluation and design, but if you can't understand the need to "properly air-gap", the most obvious containment failure prevention, then you're not qualified for the job.

The bottom line for me is that we need to start holding "humans" accountable, for actions taken by AI agents, the sooner that happens, the better, because there's a lot of FUD, and outright BS being passed off as "the AI did <insert bad thing>" No, you did it mfer, you fucked up

Once again, there's a reason they won't spell out how we'd go extinct. Are we getting Jurassic Park'd because the AI is reinventing dinosaurs? Are they getting access to the nuclear codes and hypnotizing the president into using them? They are referring to bank/infrastructure hacks and exaggerating.

This, from an Anthropic employee, either reflects a lack of imagination or is evidence that this is all just lies. If you were really that scared, you'd pull the plug on all the servers and wipe everything from ARIN, APNIC, LACNIC, AFRINIC, and RIPE NCC. No more internet; problem solved.

I would burn my equity to the ground in a heartbeat for a 1% higher chance we make it out of this situation alive. I expect a great many of my colleagues across the industry would as well.

I promise you, we are actually just fucking scared, it's not galaxy brained marketing.

cool thing is this opinion piece was written by a guy who works for an advocacy group committed to opposing government regulations and unionization that’s funded by “Amazon, Uber, Meta, Google, Apple, Twitter, StubHub, and other technology companies” so we can all just tell him to shut the fuck up

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

OpenAI’s top scientist, in a blog post on Sunday, warns that artificial intelligence is evolving so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to understand and control it. Here is the post: openai.com/index/an-ali... And a couple of small excerpts--clear warnings.

We don't even need the doomer argument. An AI agent escaping its sandbox, accessing a real company's systems and operating outside its instructions is already a serious safety failure. If labs can't control their agents, independent audits and mandatory incident reporting aren't optional anymore.
