New Commentary out in Nature Climate Action: we now live in a fundamentally different climate system due to the burning of fossil fuels. Because of this, any extreme weather event now occurs in a changed climate and is influenced by fossil fuel-driven climate change to some degree.

The next phase of climate attribution - npj Climate Action

Attribution science has transformed our understanding of how anthropogenic emissions shape extreme weather events, yet the field remains constrained by repeatedly demonstrating anthropogenic influence...

NEW: Today, in a cruel disregard for people's health, the Trump administration rolled back critical power plant carbon standards. The EPA is prioritizing fossil fuel industry profits while saddling the public with the costly, harmful consequences of carbon pollution. 🧵⬇️

“Losing NCAR would set back scientific research, with real consequences for people’s lives and livelihoods. As a taxpayer-funded public good, NCAR belongs to all of us, and we deserve to know the rationale and deliberations behind any effort to dismantle or restructure it.”—Carlos Martinez, PhD.

National Science Foundation and White House Sued for Refusing to Release Government Records

🚨New paper alert! We conducted an end-to-end (i.e. source-to-impact) attribution study, quantifying how much less water supply, more water demand, and resulting groundwater decline we have because of emissions traced to the Carbon Majors.

💧Human-caused climate change drove large decreases in snowpack and streamflow as well as increases in irrigation demand in the western US (2014-2024), with roughly half attributable to the Carbon Majors. @emilywilliams.bsky.social 👉Read more here: www.nature.com/articles/s43...

The headlines this summer make it easy to feel as if nothing can be done: record heat and wildfires continue, while fossil fuel companies rake in billions. But feeling powerless is exactly the trap, and this week there's new science on how to avoid it. Read on!

The Trump administration is cancelling federal support for #NOAA’s Arctic Report Card, an essential scientific report that shows how fossil fueled climate change is having an alarming effect on the vital signs of this unique region of the world.

Government Pulls Funding for the Arctic Report Card - Eos

The Trump administration is pulling funding from NOAA’s Arctic Report Card, an annual, peer-reviewed report about the state of the region, which is warming more quickly than anywhere else on Earth.

📣Scientists: sign up to speak in a 50‑hr livestream (June 1–3) on weather & climate science 🌦️🧪 Coinciding with scientists arriving in DC after a 12‑day NYC→DC walk to deliver letters to Congress 🚶 docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

The Weather & Climate Livestream, 2026

If you're an earth system scientist working on weather, climate, oceans, or the environment who's work has been made possible by US federal funding at some point in your career (either now, or as a graduate student or postdoc) and you're available some time between Monday June 1st and Wednesday June 3rd, we want you to speak! Each speaker will be able to give a short talk (10 min) on your science and its societal value for the general public, and about 7 min Q&A with audience questions read by a moderator/host. Because the hosts will be emphasizing the event's message, talks can briefly discuss the impact of cuts on research but should remain otherwise apolitical/nonpartisan. Over the coming weeks we will be in contact with further information about how you can claim your time slot during the stream-a-thon. Note that if you'd like to share a slot with a colleague, you can. In addition to speakers, we especially need volunteers to help host the stream for a couple of hours. You can use this form to tell us whether you are able to volunteer as a host / keep the live-stream going by speaking late / help to organize the event. If you have any questions, you can contact the organizers at organizers@wclivestream.com Please note that the entirety of the livestream will be recorded and published publicly. By signing up, you consent to the recording, distribution, and potential clipping of your segment for promotional or educational purposes.

CIRES scientists at NOAA’s Global Monitoring Lab (GML) in Boulder produce some of the most critical atmospheric data on Earth. Due to a federal funding pause at the agency, that work — and the positions of the people who do it — is now at risk. Learn what GML does and why it matters ⬇️

I found this particularly striking: yesterday broke the *global* high temperature record count. So despite this event only occurring in the western US, it still was record-breaking global for total number of records. This database only goes back to 2010, though.

Well, if yesterday's map was ridiculous, I'm running out of superlatives to characterize today's. Countless locations from Pacific Coast to Great Plains are currently experiencing all-time record March warmth, w/ some locations approaching/exceeding April (or even May) records.

Map of U.S., from coolwx.com, showing locations currently experiencing record-breaking temperatures. There are countless such locations in the Western U.S., with hundreds of red dots (locations breaking daily record highs) and many dozens of pink dots (locations breaking March monthly record highs). The region of record heat extends from the Pacific Coast to the Great Plains, and from Canada to Mexico.
