Clarkesworld has recently discovered that their August issue successfully breached containment and gained access to the Internet, where it is presently hacking reader's minds. "Oh no, what will we do? Who knew that stories could be so powerful?" said Neil Clarke, when approached for comment.

The August issue of Clarkesworld features cover art by Thomas Brissot. A young woman flanked by two robots with large swords aimed straight down appear to be conversing with a tall water bird on the edge of a leafy area. The title is "A Visit To The Oracle" and the bird's beak is open as if speaking. The background fades shows a palace of sorts behind the bird but only whiteness behind the other figures.

Here we go: we're entering the last seven days to submit to our second anthology. We're looking for fantastical, wondrous, captivating and eerie tales of spellcasting and sorcery. Give us lyrical prose, experimental fiction, vibrantly imagined tales. In short, stories that reek of magic.

Last week to submit: Submissions close midnight 31st July for our sorcery anthology. Writers living in the North of England are invited to send us short stories of 2,000-8,000 words. Visit carnyxpress.co.uk/submissions to find out more.

One of the reasons we're interested in an anthology of sorcery is to do with that misty line between magic being something wondrous and something to be feared. Sorcery is often used as a pejorative. Often it's tied up in binaries: sorceress vs wizard, folk magic vs church, hegemony vs cultural other

This is an experience that will never get tired: there are volumes of Oaths and Offerings, the anthology of folklore-inspired tales by @carnyxpress.co.uk, in which I have a story, available for purchase at the York branch of Topping & Co bookshop. They're in the myths and folklore section. Exciting!

Copies of Oaths and Offerings by Carnyx Press sit, cover facing outwards, on a bookshelf in the York branch of Topping & Co, alongside other folklore volumes.

Just a reminder that we disallow any use of gen AI in submissions to us, and we don't use it in any part of the publishing process ourselves. Anyone who tries to get around this rule and are found out will be barred from submitting to us. Also, presses talk to each other. It's not worth it.
