Do we really need to explain to people that it is really, REALLY important to read to young children? Like, you, personally, need to read to your child - your voice, your face, your hand gestures, your lap, your arms, your closeness. What kind of parent doesn't know this in their bones?

Happiest of book birthdays to three gems: a funny and affecting look at a cat and a child, a soaring journey across the ocean, and a fascinating photo book about the lives of buffalo, Indigenous people, and the prairie.

Front cover of the picture book The New Cat by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic and Chris Park. Simple, graphic illustrations depict a green-eyed cat with blue-black fur and blue-eyed baby with pale skin and blue-black cat ears looking at each other with the book's title place between them.Front cover of the picture book I Fly: An Airplane's Fantastic Flight by Kelly Rice Schmitt, illustrated by Jam Dong. Boldly colored art depicts an airplane with a worker in a cherry picker washing it, a pilot in the cockpit, and an air traffic controller pointing toward the pilot. A control tower and various buildings and airport vehicles are visible in the background.Front cover of Welcome Home, Buffalo: Restoring Connections Between People, Prairie, and Bison by Sandra Markle with Ferin Davis Anderson. The cover photo depicts a bison with fur ranging from golden to dark brown, appearing to stride through a prairie. It is in profile and facing to the right, conveying a feeling of motion toward the right-hand side of the book.

Happy book birthday to four great new releases! We have an incredible YA poetry anthology, animals in trees, dino-style community helpers, and a gorgeous picture book about a kid and their abuela.

Front cover of Witness: Poems to Address the Past, Present, and Future of Policing edited by Ari Tison and Ty Chapman with artwork by Damon Davis. The cover features what appears to be three overlapping faces with light brown eyes and skin colored in various shades of brown, peach, and a bit of purple.Front cover of a photo book called We Live in Trees! Amazing Animal Adaptations by Heather Alexander. It features a red-orange colored animal called a red panda, perched on a tree branch and appearing to look directly at the viewer, with mouth slightly open and a very cute pink tongue sticking out.Front cover of the picture book Dino-Helpers by Lisa Wheeler, illustrated by Barry Gott. It features two dinosaurs (one in firefighter gear and one in EMT gear) running across the cover and behind them a pterodactyl in police gear flying. A fire truck, ambulance, and tall city buildings are visible in the background.Front cover of the picture book Patchwork Memories by Monica Rojas, illustrated by Luisa Uribe. It features a grandmother with short white hair and peach-colored skin with a yellow shirt and purple cardigan looking off into the distance and smiling. To the right is a child (around age 8) with peach skin and brown hair in a chin-length bob wearing a yellow and white striped shirt and a light blue jean jacket. Behind them is a patchwork quilt with many different patterned squares of different colors. Along the bottom of the cover are delicate blue stitched flowers with green stems.

I want to shout out the Crush Climate Anxiety session with @patricianewman.bsky.social, @fuse8.bsky.social, and Martha Meyer. It was so well done and inspired me to keep thinking how we can best serve our young readers when publishing books on environmental topics!

Jane Yolen was an absolutely lovely human and also an almost absurdly talented writer. It's wonderful when both things are wrapped up in the same person. I considered her a friend and a colleague, and I will miss her. Condolences to the each of the many of us who knew her. Her memory is a blessing.

My mother, the inimitable Jane Yolen passed away this morning after a blessingly short fight with Alzheimer’s. She did not suffer, and went peacefully into the ether which, I am certain for her, will be filled with words of the most exquisite beauty and meaning.
