Coyote Vs. Acme (★★★) – Ignoring its long burial and miraculous rescue, it's a well-executed version of a dubious concept. Not totally free of modern family comedy tendencies, nor some lazy choices for these characters. But beyond the iffy animation, mostly successful. (1/2)

The Odyssey (★★★★) – Easy to nitpick, in regard to the source material and for some of Nolan's tendencies. But also easy to undervalue: this has all the goods as a transporting fantasy epic, anchored by a strong dramatic arc of guilt, delivering everything it wants to. (1/2)

In the Opinion of the Censor (★★★) – Victim to a lot of typical documentary flaws (little technical merits, unravels at the end), but it presents the facts and context of the outdated views applied by the Irish film censors very well. An intriguing, fascinating watch. (1/2)

Brokeback Mountain (★★★★) – A story of forbidden-from-within love that happens to be between two men told beautifully, from the score and cinematography to strong supporting players and fantastic lead performances. Specific and thus universal filmmaking. (1/2)

Tex Avery is the GOAT. What makes this bit so funny is that it's not just aimed at one particular series, but instead mocking the cutesy trend that was started by Disney and imitated by several studios trying to ape off their success by directly copying them (including MGM itself).

TOTAL RECALL was released 36 years ago. The second-most expensive film ever made at the time, and among the most popular films of both Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the story behind the scenes is as bonkers as what we see on the screen… 1/47

Cars (★★★1/2) – Certainly Pixar's weakest of their Golden Age (their first 11), and little reaches their typical resonance beyond Doc Hudson. But the nostalgia for American small towns and the Southwest serves it very well, as does the commitment to slowing down and appreciating life. (1/2)

Shrek (★★) – Never a favourite as a kid, and even worse now: the humour is nasty, cynical and crude, the emotions are tinny and cheap, and it's among the worst-looking big-budget studio CG features. Dispiriting that this set the template for animated features for ages. (1/2)

Kids will watch anything. It's all about giving them options and then actually watching things with them. B&W, silent, any genre... they'll try it all. But if you only feed them new Hollywood product, don't be surprised if that's all they crave. It's your fault for only feeding them McDonald's.

Man, this is such a nihilistic take. Forget Lord of the Rings. My kids have watched The Wizard of Oz. The Godfather. Planet of the Apes. TONS of classics that are quite a bit older than 30 years, and they’ve enjoyed and appreciated them all.

The Road to El Dorado (★★★) – In many ways, a less successful version of Emperor's New Groove, caught between genial comedy and its dramedy production roots, in visual approach as well as tone. Zippy performances and a pleasant comic script make it go down fine enough.
