It’s heartwarming that Emmett Till is honored in Chicago, but we must acknowledge that the racism in Mississippi which led to his murder thrives, as people there symbolically lynch him on a regular basis by vandalizing a sign marking where his body was recovered We still have so much work to do

Emmett Till was born right here in Chicago on July 25, 1941. And it is with deep humility and great pride that I signed legislation this week at Roberts Temple to declare his birthday as the Illinois Day of Reflection and Remembrance of Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley.

In my essay for @qianawhitted.bsky.social Desegregating Comics, I wrote a little ab Emmett Till as a comics reader. The bed he was in when he was kidnapped was piled with comics and magazines; one of his Chicago neighbors said a bit about his comics reading. He was a kid. He should still be here.
