"The Problem" It's no longer surprising, but always still shameful and appalling to witness.

Update: Sister is self evacuating from the fires due to extremely poor AQI. 1700 at the sensor down the road from her. The smoke is choking them out. So she’s coming here! Yay for me. Sad about the reasons.
I guess I haven't clicked around enough in some of the gallery recently, I didn't realize so many spots now have a 360-degree view.

Just saw a NWS heat alert "temperatures will be in the mid 90s to mid 100s". My brain interprets "mid 100s" as ~140-160 🌡️
"Vacances ... plus près, moins cher… et le plus loin possible des canicules !" pretty much sums up my personal adventure goals this summer. But I just looked at the forescast for an upcoming camping trip and it's supposed to be 95-100F every day, and above 55 every night. 😭🥵

I deleted a bunch of ios apps to try to downsize some of the storage hogs on my phone., including bluesky. And while I do sometimes use a laptop browser, 95% of my use is via the phone app (and all my photos are on the phone). Might leave it off for awhile, to see how my usage shifts...🤔
Some post-sunset views along the shoreline last night.
I am going through storage usage on my phone, to inform minimum specs for a new one. It's just bizarre the bloat that goes along with so many basic apps. Safari is using up >2GB! And bluesky is using just as much. Even ebird is 1GB. My biggest usage is photo & video, which is my space priority.

San Bruno neighbors say Waymos have left people traveling to SFO on their street
After reports of stranded passengers and vehicles blocking driveways, Waymo said Thursday night that it was "able to remedy the situation."

Cool idea, and mixes well with putting some responders on foot and bike. This also reminded me of the scene from I 💙 Huckabees, where the firefighter on a bicycle arrives at the fire first, because the firetrucks were stuck in traffic. I love that scene! 😆
To those about to ask how you carry a stretcher on those bikes: 1: Not all EMS calls require a transport. 2: If you do need a transport, radios to call for a truck ambulance exist, and getting to someone faster to start aid in a congested area is still good.
I realized recently that thanks to my gradually expanding use of outdoor-related apps (mostly community science) I'm now spreading not just georeferenced data about my excursions but detailed time & date info. 🤔🌐📍 How do other folks balance your interest in contributing with privacy?

@xenolith.bsky.social @coconinoite.bsky.social @christinatoms.bsky.social @elizabethh.bsky.social & others! We had some discussion earlier this year about a 2027 marin headlands wildflower outing? Do we want to have a planning chat in a more easily trackable space?
As you're thinking about where to submit your work, the TC is excited to highlight several TC-sponsored sessions that span a wide range of hydrologic and critical zone science. Whether you're a first-time presenter or a longtime AGU attendee, we'd love to see your science in one of these sessions!🧵👇

AGU26 abstract deadline is coming up fast! Help get the word out about work being done on development of standards for field equipment operations -- or make the case for the need for new standards in hydrology, seismology, or near-surface geophysics.
Are you working on instrumentation standards or best practices in near-surface geophysics, hydrology, or seismology? Share your work in our #AGU26 Poster Session (IN038)! ⚒️🧪 agu.confex.com/agu/agu26/prelim.cgi/Session/280115
This was a very interesting discussion/interview, glad I got to listen. Added the book to my TBR list on water issues.

Wow, that is far worse than I realized. If you are up that way, crank up the air filters, and don't forget your masks 😷 Not a great to happen during the upcoming heatwave, where a t folks will want/need to open windows to try to cool things down.
Why is smoke from #WoodsideFire in Sonoma County so bad from a small blaze? Winds are being channeled through the Russian River and Petaluma Gap, bringing smoke to the Hwy 101 corridor. A shallow marine layer ~1,500ft w/ hot air above cold air prevents smoky winds from mixing w/ the free atmosphere

everyone knows that the "protecting women's sports" is *always* a stepping store to further anti-trans discrimination. but wasn't expecting Acton's campaign literally *ban* trans ppl from Dem events
1. In the aftermath of forcing the Ohio Progressive Caucus to delete criticism of Amy Acton for calling trans girls "boys," progressives were promised a meeting with Acton. Now, we have learned she didn't show up, and kicked trans people out of the meeting. Subscribe to support our journalism.

My CA state parks pass expires Friday, so I was just looking over how much I used it. I don't get one every year, but having one does make it more likely I'll pop into parks that I might not otherwise. No value added if I'm camping, though. How do you decide what park passes to get? #PublicLands
