This is not the difficult question that it is for some artists (Polanski, Woody Allen, etc.) "HP is a mildly entertaining hodgepodge of fantasy tropes" and "Rowling uses the HP money to fund a hateful discrimination campaign" are two true and logically independent statements.

My cousin is an aspiring plumber--there's nothing wrong with that. The "pathway" that got him there was Boy Scouts, which will introduce you to a lot of things without ruling anything out.

I agree with the rest of this thread, but this post is the equivalent of insisting we use only the strictly Marxist definition of class while ignoring all cultural meaning. Development intensity has real meaning and effects on people's lives.

Yup. It's fine to say "America is great because it welcomes immigrants like Flo Balogun." But the reality is so many USMNT players grew up in countries that value mass participation and meritocracy, instead of parents jockeying for scholarships.

I think lots of people claim to be superior precisely BECAUSE they know their position is due to luck. The louder they scream about who is deserving and who is not, the more it seems that all those social inequalities are natural.
Todd Walker@toddwalker.bsky.social · 2y agoThe conditions of one’s birth - country, parents’ wealth and education, language, etc. - are the biggest lottery ticket you never paid for. To be proud of any of it or look down on others’ lot is the pinnacle of delusion.
This makes me nostalgic for a time when parents justified the insane focus on sports by arguing that it taught values like team spirit and dedication. That was 90% bullshit, but it was better than deluding themselves into hoping for free college tuition.
